I'd rather grow into a camera than grow out of one, if that makes sense.

Between $250-$300. That's for the body and a 18-55mm lens, battery, cables, strap, and lens cover.

If it's in good shape, that's a square deal.

My 3100 kit was $450 new. 18-55, but did not include cables (got a million USB cables anyways).
Picked up a factory refurbed 55-200 from Adorama for $150, and around $150 for a Sigma 610 flash from Best Buy.

Tried to pick a gadget bag, but decided to go local with that (Best Buy). Found a cool Nikon bag for $80. Best Buy had a Canon bag that was a little larger for $10 or $15 less. I bought that one, then pried the Canon logo off of the flap.

The rubber lens hoods are worthless for the 18-55... they start to get into the corners quickly, but Nikon makes a nice snap-on hood for the lens (again, Adorama was my source).
Definitely pick up a circular polarizer if you plan outdoor shooting.

The only difference between these two shots was the position of the polarizer.
Fluffy clouds would have really popped against the darker sky.

I'll be grabbing some new lenses here soon so if anyone is looking for Nikon kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200 VR) to get started in photography let me know.

Best Buy has the Nikon D5100 for $590, and the 70-300mm was $580. If you buy both, you get $200 off! I debated - $1000 for a great lens and a great mid-level camera, but I ended up just doing the $580 for the lens and sticking with the D60 I already had.

Just bought a Nikon D5100 with 18-55mm lens this week. I'm still learning, but I'm really liking the photography hobby!
