I'm getting really tired of stupid people lately. We've been running into morons daily for the past few days.

Today we went into the forest service to talk to them about mitigation. The back of my moms house is only 30 feet from the forest service boundary and we'd like to mitigate to the 100 feet ideal since everything is burning (and it seems there's nothing left to burn but our area). So we wanted to see if we needed to get a permit to cut on their property. First of all, we had to repeat that 3 times in order for her to understand what we were talking about.

Long story short, the woman gave us a sheet about cutting down dead trees, which we don't have any. "Well...LIVE trees don't burn." Tell that to be people in Black Forest! And my dad went off on her LOL.

The problem is they do burn now because we 'fight' fires that are part of the natural cycle of things. It burns off old dead & dying trees and the young and healthy green trees remain. Some pine cones even require being burned to germinate and grow new trees from. That is until we get involved and our arrogance makes us think we can prevent a natural disaster. What ends up happening is we save the old dead and dying trees long enough that when we DO have fires they are huge ragers where the temps are so high that even the healthy and young trees dry and then burn. I get that people live in these areas and I even know people who have been affected by these fires but it's just the way things are unfortunately. The problem is we don't spend hundreds of millions of dollars fighting tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunamis yet we fight fires which ends up coming around to bite us in the ass even harder later on. We're starting to see that now with the largest and most dangerous wildfires in Colorado history and it's not because of global warming.

That being said, your property and you're making steps to prevent structure damage and clear 100' to the structure... do it. If it were me and I took the effort to ask and got push back I would then go through with it and if anyone wants to throw a stink about it then ask for forgives since you attempted to ask for permission. After all, when your house is still standing what does it matter what they have to say to you?

Exactly. We eventually figured out it's only a $15 permit. We did a bunch of clearing about 2 years ago up to their property line but figured might as well do the full 100 ft just to be safe. We already have the concrete roof tiles and we're going to look into replacing our deck soonish with something a bit more fire resistant. If that's too expensive, at least put new boards down for now since ours are super old and dried out.

This^^ We don't want it to burn so mother nature sends the beatles to insure some burning. Circle of life. Somtimes things need to be cleared. What gets me is how ignorant some of these home owners in heavily forested areas are. They take no pre-cautions on their own property to minimize fire danger and then its "Poor me, poor me." Some people just bring this on all on their own.

I did not read the last 7pgs of bs but I did read the previous post and I know that I did like three hours of mitigation on the cabin property and it is hard effing work, but if you don't do it, you are asking for it. Before it looks like a playground for fire, afterward it looks like nature under control

Good job. Someone posted earlier a video from the black forest fire showing how proper mitigation helped the fire fighters save a home from burning.

I'm glad you guys agree with me. That sort of post isn't well received on many forums so I wasn't sure if I would get flamed (pun intended) or not for posting it. It just amazes me how many people don't get it and expect US to bail them all out when things get bad. Only way I would EVER own a mountain home is if it was a 2nd home, a cabin for instance. I wouldn't keep anything irreplaceable in it and I would keep my ins premiums current. If I was up there and I was told to evacuate I would be in my truck hauling ass down the hill before they finished the statement. The other thing that irks me are the people who stay and put their lives and maybe more importantly the lives of the rescue workers in danger. They say shit like 'It's been in our family for generations' and the like but ain't no house worth your life. If you build in an area that is known for natural disasters you better make peace with that happening in case it does.

Huerfano fire went from 350 acres to 9,000. 8-9 structures but no detail if they're homes. 0% contained, growing pretty damn fast!

I went to high school outside of Trinidad and still have a lot of friends in that area. This fire season is a cruel bitch.

Yes sir. I am of the same thought process on this for sure. Primary residence or 2nd home if I built one in the mountains in a forest it would be built from concrete and steel. Or better yet... built into the mountain. :)
