In most cases, I'd agree that OEM is at least "not bad"
It all depends on who the manufacturer is. In many cases, it is Wix or Bosch/Purolator.

But in the case of AC Delco, it is Champion Labs, and since around 2004 or 2005, they have been the "E-Core" design, which is a plastic "cage" support tube and glued fiber endplates. Possibly worse than Fram.

Well I don't use A/C Delco. I use wix on my Duramax work van.
But with Caterpillar I use OEM Same with Cummins I use the Fleet Gaurd. I do agree some OEM are not well made and Fram is about a bad as they come...

I use conventional 5W30 and use whatever oil is on sale in my 01. I like the Purolator Classic. Just change it every 3-5K. You'll be fine.

I just got my Tacoma with 33k on it....Changed the oil to Mobil 1 5w-30 syn at 34K...I have a Bosch on it now...But I imagine I will use the OEM ...I plan to run the oil for 7,500 miles but change the filter at 3k....I don't believe you can go wrong with the Bosch, Mobil 1 , or the OEM....since the oem's are pretty inexpensive and the filter is on-top of the motor its easy enough to change the filter at 3k just for cheap insurance

Just got some extra filters when I went to the dealer.

Can't remember the # but the same as what was on there.
They were 4$. I did have a 15% off and got a better price as they give a break on price if over 3.

Is there something I'm not seeing? Why order and get a batch of 10 when I can stop in and get them around 4$ every day at the dealer.

    OEM filter for me.

I worked for Purolator in the mid-90's during my summer breaks in college and saw first-hand every day how they manufactured the same oil filter for multiple companies. We would shut the line down once or twice a day so the paint room could switch colors for different manufacturers, otherwise the line was running full speed using the same internal components all day and night. We produced the same oil filter for at least four or five manufacturers.

One summer I worked on a panel air filter line for the Ford Taurus and the only change we made during our various production runs was in the color of the urethane border...some companies required orange and most others required black. The filter and wire elements were the exact same in every filter, only the urethane borders were different colors. I can't remember how many manufacturers we produced the same exact filter for (minus the different color urethane), but I know it was at least four or five.

I believe they shut that plant down in '97.

A round trip to my nearest dealer takes at least an hour. And my dealer charges a little more than $4.

That is very common. Fram and Champion Labs do the same thing.
AC/Delco, STP, Supertech (and others) are all Champion Labs e-Core filters (possibly worse than Fram).
Champion Labs premium line is the K&N, Mobil-1, and TRD.
Bosch used to be Champion, but around 2004, Bosch purchased Purolator, and Bosch filters are now run on the Purolator line.
Fram makes Fram, Pennzoil, Microguard... and others.

    eBay.
    10 filters for $40 shipped.
Camelback Toyota... shipping extra, but 20 filters is around $90 shipped. 10 would probably be $50.

Dealer (don't pay more than $5).
eBay (box of 10 for $40 shipped)
Camelback Toyota, Titus-Will Toyota, Toyota of Dallas....
Shipping is around $10, filters are around $3.90, so the more you buy the better off you are factoring in shipping.

But the eBay deal is the best, and I think they come with drain plug gaskets.

I've got a Fumoto drain valve, so it's not an issue for me either.

after buying my 10 taco last november, i viewed a video on the differences between the after market, (junk), filters and oem. it sold me. i went on line and bought a case for like $48, (12 per cs), which i think included shipping. i run castrol gtx in all 4 of my vehicles but that's negotiable. the filters, in my opinion, are not. good luck

Mobil 209 is the replacement for the toyota OEM, not the one that Chris used for his comparisons. I spoke with the manager for lube dept. at the Toyota dealer and mentioned this to him. He said that all the auto parts store give tou the wrong filter, becuase that is what toyota put on the books. It was an error and they are basically giving you the oil filter for the 4cyl. Engine. Of course if you cross-reference the part # of thie toyota filter, then you will get the true replacement for any brand you want. i personally go with Mobil 1 oil filter and mobil 1 full synhtetic, cause I omly have to change the oil once a year with that combo.
