Hole in gas tank? I think it's vandalism/theft.

Technically you can. I think anything over an ounce is punishable by jail time.

I was talking about the US anyways. I know in some states a single joint=jail time.

This thread has gone from slightly useful, with gas tank prices and ideas on how to prevent this from happening to the OP in the future, to a useless argument about the morals involved in shooting a thief. I'm just guessing, but I doubt the OP really cares whether or not any of you would shoot the guy who vandalized his truck, or whether or not the asshole who punched a hole in his gas tank was a drug addict or an honest man trying to feed his family.

Because clearly the point I was getting at in the entire post was about possession of pot and not just a small example.

No ones life is worth taking over money or possessions. But whats to stop them from stealing from you. Atleast the law in Texas I hope would deter them. They took the risk. Now what about the brave father that gives his life in the line of duty.

The discussion went on to be only about gas being stolen. It was more than gas stolen. It technically was $715 worth of gas tank stolen when the person ruined it.

I wasn't able to take a picture but it was a hole like a drill bit. The truck has been towed and insurance claim was done.

I feel your pain. Not only have you lost money, but also the time you spent dealing with this nonsense. I'm also not sure why people seem to be taking the side of the person who fucked up your truck, like it was your fault you didn't protect your assets better.

What I've been able to learn from this thread:
    1. a new gas tank costs between $125 and $750
    2. A gas tank skid plate may be effective in preventing this in the future, but fiberglass between the plate and the tank is more effective
    3. Shooting someone who is vandalizing your property is legal in Texas
    4. Regardless of the legality most people consider it immoral
    5. Most people who vandalize vehicles and steal gas, are trying to feed their families
    6. It's the responsibility of the person who owns the truck to make it an unappealing target because if they don't, the hungry people will have no choice but to vandalize it in order to feed their hungry children

No one said that, I'm just being sarcastic because this thread went so far off topic, and started to delve into the fact that we shouldn't shoot thieves because they are all trying to feed their starving families. However, no one seemed to care or mention that theft and the associated vandalism is immoral. Just that shooting a thief is immoral because they might have a starving family. But really, lets get back to helping the OP with his vandalism issue.

Just to clarify, in Texas you can go to state jail for up to 2 years.

You can't compare a man who shoots someone for vandalizing property to a man who served in the military. That is like apples to oranges.

Hold the phone, slick. It's ok (legal, and even celebrated by some) for me to blow the daylights out of countries like Iraq and Trashcanistan, and I mean fucking level (rocket artillery is a real sweetheart like that), but I'm the asshole for popping off some half-wit loser who is stealing from me?

Isn't the thief the aggressor? Goes back to my earlier statement; an upstanding man would ask for help (or maybe try to sneak a loaf of bread) without causing damage and hardship. That said, the man devoid of character simply takes because it's there regardless of the hardships caused to the victim, and in my book is has not only cast the first stone, but is a worthless human who contributes nothing to society.

Yes you can. A whole lotta folks have died at our hands over the last 12 years who didn't do shit, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. That's a fact.

In response to the bold statement, Yes. Just because you obviously have no love for our military, or what they are doing does not excuse you to think that that you are entitled to just shoot someone for stealing something. Period.

In response to the second quoted statement, no, there is a HUGE difference between a man or woman who serves their country and does their duty, be it good or bad, and a person who walks out their front door and shoots someone who is stealing gas. Military personnel are doing their duty as directed by their superiors. The person shooting a thief is simply taking the law into their own hands. BIG difference there "Slick".

The interesting thing is that those men and women who you seem to hate due to your statement of " A whole lotta folks have died at our hands over the last 12 years who didn't do shit, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time" which one can only calculate you have directed towards our military, are the same people who who allow you to HAVE the right to have your opinion.

And yes, I do see the irony in the fact that you are in the army.

First, to stay on topic, you should definitely get the tank replaced. Any other repair is likely not a permanent repair.

On the subject of the vandals:

If someone comes to my door and asks for food, I will give them food. If they ask for money, gas, cigarettes, etc., the answer is NO.

If I catch someone stealing my gas, I will call the authorities, and attempt to detain them via my weapon. If they run, I will not shoot them. If they come toward me, I will shoot to subdue, period.

If I catch someone breaking into my house, whether they try to run or not, I will shoot to kill, period. Minimum of 3 shots with the 9MM, minimum of 1 shot with the 12 gauge, depends which one I get to first. My family comes first, and if someone breaks in, I have to believe that they intend harm. It is a rough world out there, and I can't afford to take chances.

I am not a mean person. This is just one of the things that I have zero tolerance on.
