On-Board Air compressors? Your Preference?

Looking for an on-board air compressor and would like to know what you all prefer. Need one for an 02' Taco w/Super Charger.

I run a Masterflow 50 hard mounted under the hood. Airs four 33x10.5 from 16 to 32 in about 10 minutes. Well, maybe it takes about 12 minutes now, the thing is pretty old.

 

Im thinking about mounting mine inside my tool box. But under the hood seems like it might be better. I know some like the smitty built ones are able to be hard wired, but what if they come with a cigarette plug, can you just wack the plug off and hard wire it.

 

Do not get an compressor that has a cig adapter, they are cheap and duty-cycles are much too low for real use. If you were to try and air up a few tires it would take you 30 minutes until the compressor burns up and dies less halfway through the job.

 

I went with the ARB twin comp and mounted under hood. If you have ABS that spot is not available. Tight fit regardless.

Power Tank

 

Sure, CO2 systems are nice, definitely fast for filling tires and running air tools. They do get a little bit more complicated if you need them for lockers, still a good option tho.

 

Not that complicated..mount the solenoids, the run a line to the bottle and just make a T with a valve fitting at the bottle. Use the regulator to set it at 80psi and your done. Close the valve and open the tank to 200+psi for filling tires.


Easier then a compressor if you ask me. Don't have to run power wires for the compressor.

Not that that's hard either but some less to do.

 

I have the master flow 50 also. It works very well. If you keep your eye out you can get one for around $40 on Amazon warehouse deals.

 

If you are going to run ARB lockers, you will have to add a permanent manifold and air lines to the diffs which may impact where you keep the tank. That is what I was referring to.

 

Right. That's what I meant by solenoids. Which are pretty small and easy to mount under the truck tucked away safe.

Air lines are no different then with a compressor.

Most tanks have to go in the bed anyways. So really, lines are easier to run as it's split half and half instead of short up front and long out back.

And no fuses to blow either.

As far as compressors go, the 12v Puma is by far the best bang for the buck.
$228 gets you the compressor, tank, regulator, pressure switch, gauges and a bunch of fittings. Just separate the components and mount them in the best spot for your rig.

An Ebay seller "Buzzard Gulch Tools" usually has the best price.

Folks have been using them for years. Google "12v Puma Compressor" for pics, info and installs.

That being said I use both CO2 and a back up portable compressor, an extremely modified Masterflow.
