    If it's going to be a 2x4 bottom rail on edge , the easiest way is to use a 2x4 joist hanger or fence rail hanger

    That's not the best looking way , but it's an easy , strong connection

    They make fence hardware that is similar to a joist hanger but without the " ears " , it's kinda like a box , you screw it to the post on either side , drop in the rail and screw the rail in through the sides of the hanger
