Backlit gauges

Ok I have a question about the dash gauges in my 09 Taco. The gauges are always lit up, I can't shut them off...is this normal? I have never had a car with gauges that stayed lit even in daytime.

My 07 will only light up after I turn the head lights on, but toyota changed a few things on the 09s so not sure if this is normal.

 

Yes normal. They are lit due to the fact that they are far recessed into the dash, thus under normal daytime driving conditions there is the potential to have difficulty accurately reading them in situations such as dark rainy/snowy days.

 

mine stay on all the time...i don't think it is tied to the DTRL's because my guages are on before my DTRL's come on.

You have tested the dimmer option correct?

 

Yes I have..I could prob just dim the lights all the way down during the day.

 

most all newer cars have this feature now...it's so on overcast days or if you drive through a tunnel or something you can still see your guages...maybe some kind of safety thing....has nothing to do with drl which i think are a stupid invention..lol

 

I don't have DTRLs and my guages are always backlit. They dim down when I turn on my headlights, but you can adjust the brightness with the dial to the left of the guage cluster on the dash.

 

I just noticed at lunch that if you turn the dial all of the way down, the lights will go dark.
