Click the above link for a tutorial showing how you can set up a Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) desktop as a full replacement for a Windows desktop, one with all the software people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops.

The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and best of all the software comes FREE of charge!

Linux Mint 7 is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 9.04. It offers thousands of packages in its on line repositories including multimedia codecs, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Skype, Google Earth, etc., software that can be difficult to install on certain other distributions. Mint's ease of use right out of the box provides a truly user-friendly desktop experience for Linux newbies, and Linux veterans love it for its tremendous power and flexibility.

Bump. Been a Linux user for years, and an Ubuntu user just as long. Highly recommend this.

The latest Ubuntu version (9.10) will configure dual boot automatically for you. Right from the windows install.

You can also install VirtualBox and run Linux in a Virtual Machine, but that's a whole other topic.
