Nice looking motor. Did you clean and paint the valve covers and intake? They look brand new.

 

Impressive, and I'd give props to YotaShop for shipping that engine and from the pics looked to be well wrapped.

 

Judging by how clean the intake runners are I'm gonna say they were probably refurbished and pressure washed inside.

I had my old MR2 looking the same after I used an industrial steam cleaner when I had the engine out of it

Yes I did. It took me maybe 25 minutes to prep and paint the air chambers and head (valve) covers..
It took me 3 days to accent the logo black...

I clear coated the valve covers.... That's why they look slightly different..in color...
I don't know why Toyota refers to the valve covers as (Head Covers).... go figure...

 

Well YotaShop gets a strong 5 STARS from me on packaging the motor.
It arrived in CLEAN and what I consider mint condition..
for a rebuild that is...

 

I don't know how they did it ??. I can't believe they are factory new but they sure look like it... I was very impressed...to say the least..

OK she’s in the truck… now all I gots ta do is put everything back where they go..
Above the air chambers are off and ready to hook up the electrical.

I am assuming of course that you already know this, but just to be safe, the 3.4 is a bitch to prime on the oil pump. I have to crank them for close to 60 seconds, at 15 seconds at a time, with the ignition turned off before I got any pressure.

 

Back with a video for the start up.

I said in the video YotaShop recommended break-in at 1500 to 2000. It should be from 1500 to 2400 rpm..
Also to prime the engine with oil...I ran the engine for Four 8 seconds intervals... no specific reason...

I varied the rpm between 1500 and 2400.
On my first 15 minute I had the heater set to maximum and the after burners full throttle..
Man-O-man did she put out some heat. But hey I did forget to open the copilot’s hatch… Not to worry none.. on the remaining 30 minutes my copilot better have his seat belt on tight cuz his hatch is gonna be fully opened..

My heat gauge never reached the mid range… (Slightly below mid point) only because I believe with all the good luck offers I got from members here… it paid of WID big dividends.. after I had primed the engine I was ready to start with the first 15 minute break-in.

Passing by the radiator ….I just for no conscious reason reached over and popped the radiator cap. Wouldn’t ya know it. I was low. Had to add 4 QUARTS… go figure..

(This is my opinion) Also know you do not have to do the full 15 minutes in one session. If the need be you can break it into 5 minutes intervals. You just cannot allow the engine to idle below 1500 rpm.
(Long drawn out reason for that)
Kill the engine while it is in the 1500/2400 rpm range.. You need a full 45 minutes of break in time on the engine according to YotaShop.. After all it’s their rebuild..

To me… my SotaShop’s rebuilt 5VZ sounds great and it feels great too if you can figure that one out.. I will be back here around 2000 miles with a compression reading. 2000 miles cuz I b headed to Houston as soon as possible..

I will also post a condensed Customer Review latter… so far all 5 Stars. I’m trying to find a Con some where??
I hope everyone interested in Toyota rebuilt engine got something from this review..
Until now I found a flat Zero Customer Review for YotaShop…..

PS: you should be aware.....what works for me does not assure the same will work fer you-all...

Actually I did not know these motors were that hard to prime… hell I was seriously considering not adding the fourth 8 seconds.. It was hard for me to imagine all those critical bearings having to go through that much friction with out a fresh supply of oil..

I’m not at all sure I have big enough cahonies to pull a true 60 tho…
O well …….too late now.. I have to hope YotaShop used a perineum break-in lube… enough to carry a split second starve before a fresh supply of lube arrives….

Bt the way… you remember dem old engines back in the day.. you know the ones.. dem dat California dun knew caused all the tall trees to die and dun made the spotted owls nearly extinct. Yea…. the one-dat dun poisoned our environment having caused man to explore the moon and mars for a better and safer place to habitat ..

Yea …..you know dem motors like what dun come in dem old 65 Mustangs….

like da one I dun bought new way back in nineteen hundred and sixty five. ...

Now we gets dem new engine what California dun knows to be environmental healing… so much so there be so much new trees dem forest fires dun be wilder and mo dangerous dan ever……..

The environment is so improved da beginning ta believe earth is now da better place to live now days..

Course priming one O den environmental friendly engine is like playing Russian roulette wid a 44 magnum and five live rounds in da chamber…

Yes, I do remember the older engines. You are of course a good bit older than me, but my first car was a 70 Mustang with a Boss 302 in it. I LOVED that car. Wish I still had it now! My dad told me about his first car, a 32 roadster. I would KILL for that one today. Hahaha.

Here is the big difference on the priming. Our old-school engines used a pump that was driven typically off the distributor, and was a direct sump into the oil pan. These were easy to spin up and prime, since they by design tended to hold the oil in themselves better. The Tacoma uses a pump that is located in the front of the engine, and is driven by the crankshaft itself. They are a horizontal design, thus they tend to drain back easier than the older ones we had. It takes a bit more to prime those pumps, and then to get the oil into the top of the engines!

At first I wasn’t going to fool with this motor. I had never worked on these newer breed of motors before. Then after looking it over I thought ….
Why Not.. Hell it ant working now… I gots the time..

After understanding how and why for all the electronic, I can see how these new breed far exceed the older type motors for fuel efficiency. Turns out they are right next to no-brainers… to work on..
