No, I'm one of my Objectivists. And with that, I believe I'll do what I should have in the first place and that's to bid myself adieu from this thread.

A circle is not a sphere - a circle is a two dimensional (flat) shape.

That said, regardless of what common people may or may not have believed, educated people had the concept of a spherical earth back to the Greeks. Magellan was the first to try to circumnavigate the globe, but didn't come up with the idea that the earth wasn't flat. Even if the text in the bible did say "sphere" or "globe" (and it's quite possible that it does, and the translation has been botched in the interim), it wouldn't illustrate any kind of special insight that wasn't possessed elsewhere during the time it was written.

I haven't been on since yesterday afternoon, but OZ, you are the first person I have ever met that explained things based on what I believe as far as religion in this one statement. Thank you sir. I do believe in SOME of what was written in the Bible. I also know that man has always tried to find ways to explain things, and that the Bible is one of the many books written to explain things. Of course as I have always said before, the Bible was written by Man, who is in itself imperfect.

That's an important point, OZ. :)

Once each of us has chosen their point of view, short of a genuine life threatening or life altering experience, they will take what they chose and all of its just and deserved consequences with them to their grave.

So the point should not be to engage in the futility of persuasion, because no one is ever persuaded to change their view by anonymous words on an internet forum. They have no power. Only our own life experience has the power. The real world self inflicted consequences each of us spins into motion by our own actions is the only real persuasion.

While it's interesting to participate in endless non conclusive discussions like this, it's good to remember that the real value in them is entertainment.

Ever wonder why there is never conclusive proof either way? There never will be, because that was wisely designed to never rob anyone of their own freedom to choose.

Proof can only be by our own personal experience alone... and as such is non transferrable to others. So everyone is totally free to choose the moral standard by which they will live...

...and their own life will let them know whether or not they chose wisely.

Evolution 100%. I'm not saying I don't believe in a "higher power" though, I do certainly hope humans aren't the smartest thing in the universe. That'd be a shame..

    The better coast
I have said to the Jehovah witnesses that come around my neighborhood....never ceases to stop them...

What DID work is when I had just got out of the showed and proceeded to hear their whole spiel while in a towel that wouldn't cover my girlfriend. Haven't been back since :D

Then why didn't anyone understand that to mean a globe? It was understood to be a round disk, not a globe until people that need to prove that everything is true in the bible decided that it could be translated as saying a globe. What was the original text?

Why above the circle? Above suggests the circle is flat. God could only look down upon the icy north pole.

While I do believe in God and Jesus, who are YOU to judge anyone? Perhaps his belief and opinions are different than yours, but that does not make him arbitrarily wrong. You have what YOU believe and have faith is the truth, however even YOU have to admit that you can not PROVE beyond ANY shadow of doubt that you are correct, just as nobody can PROVE beyond that same shadow of doubt that you are Incorrect. It is called FAITH for a reason. Otherwise even the Catholics would call it fact, not faith. It is best to simply say "I do not believe the same way you do because of my beliefs" rather than to directly say someone is wrong, without being able to provide facts to prove otherwise.

Every human on the Earth sees a curved horizon. So it's perfectly logical to call the Earth a circle. The Bible is a book about moral accountability. It is not a physics textbook. To attack it on that basis is silly.

Beyond that point there is a demonstration of what every secularist freely chooses to cheat themselves out of:

The experience of loving What made them.

That verse is part of a piece of transcendent poetry which expresses a genuinely beautiful sentiment which those who have chosen to become infested by the ugliness of the world will never see.

Everyone constantly judges one thing as being better or worse than another. That's how we each choose our path to walk in this life. It's the reality of the consequences of our own choices which renders the final verdict on our judgments.

Some here believe that the Bible must be 100% accurate or it is false. You obviously don't accept that view, so I wasn't talking to you. They must try to explain all of the bible as physically possible, so yes to them it is very much a physics textbook. They claim this is proof that the bible says the earth is a globe, even though that was not what Christians understood.

I was just looking up early maps of the earth. Some of the first maps in 350 and older BC were discs but at the time of Jesus that had expanded to a football shape. and then more of an Archipelago Square around when those passages were written. just my thoughts on it.

I understand that your complaint isn't with me. I'm just offering the view that the Bible is 100% accurate in its description of the moral laws which govern our behavior. And that the beautiful wisdom in its words is worth heeding for our own good as well as for the good of others with whom we are living.

Everything else is just fluff. ;)
