Doesn't Apple charge money for their updates? I know it costs money to upgrade to a newer OS on both Apples and PC's, but Windows gives out their OS updates for free.

Most of Window's updates are mostly for security reasons and such, with a few fixes here and there. I have no desire to upgrade to Windows 8 though. I am perfectly happy with Windows 7. There are lots of people still running Windows XP, mostly because Windows Vista wasn't very good, but that number is dwindling now since less and less software is supporting windows XP anymore.

I say all that because I imagine OS upgrades on Apples are similar. The new OS's make a bunch of changes and some you like and some you don't. Basically just because something is outdated doesn't mean it is bad. You drive a 1st gen even though there are 2nd gens out there.

My battery went like two years ago and I didn't really like the 130 buck for the new one. Hard rice and ram you can do yourself. Easy peasy! Graphics card is not so easy. Btw stuck to hitachi for your Mac HD. They seem to work best as I have five years out of mine.

I've had my Alienware for just over a year now, and it's still good to go. I'm amazed that I've actually almost used 400gb of my hard drive!

The one thing I hate about laptops is how much of a pain it is to upgrade the hardware. This is one of the main reasons I got an Alienware, I can easily swap in a new hard drive, cpu, or memory. You can technically swap in a new video card too, but it requires custom software to make it play nice with the built in video card on the motherboard.

I can't wait to get my own place so I can build myself a desktop again!

computability or compatibility? An OS update is likely to just make computability issues worse since newer OS's use more resources to run.

At a premium price though... Alienware is an expensive name to buy... I'm running a nice ASUS for now and it does alright. Cost me $1500 initially and is a bit outdated, but it works well for what I do with it. Which anymore is just surf the internet and watching Dragon Ball. haha Maybe when I get all moved I will buy the new expansion of Star Craft 2. It should handle it just fine.

nerd talk. My domain! You guys have it pretty much covered though.
I've had my Dell laptop for almost five years now, and it's a refurbished unit... Switching to Lenovo soon. Probably try to make this laptop stretch another semester or two.

Behave for a few hours for a wedding? Doesn't seem terribly hard. I don't know though, never been to a mass. Not sure how much different it is than church?

    I like it...I want it...haha

Why I hate laptops..or OME of the many reasons.

Not true. Most standard HDs are 52-5500rpm actually. And you can get 10,000rpm too. I have dual 10,000 in RAID 0 for super fast game loading.

Also not true about the CPUs. Sure there are lots of socket it types now. But you can almost always upgrade to a better CPUs.

RAM can make a huge difference. But all depends on your CPU. Ram is instant temporary memory. That's why with 64 bit architecture your seeing more programs load 100% into ram and why a lot of computer come with 8-12gb or ram now.

But if your CPU sucks and can't handle the info the ram is trying to get processed it'll still bottle neck.

Technically n this day and age it's always the CPU bottleneck ing shit. Gpus have hundreds of processing cores now which makes for insane amount of power. But for so,e reason our main ones are limited to 8/16 if you count hyper thread processing. Or 16/32 if you run dual processor. I have dual 6 cores in my Mac.

But ultimately. Laptops suck for upgrading either way. Only way to get a computer that is upgradable is a desktop.

Nope. Totally free. New full update is cheap too

No it doesn't. Plus the gpu in the motherboards suck compared to a nice outboard one. You can use the normal software to switch it off or sorta an SLI setup or dedicated physicx card.

Alien ware is a rip off too..sorry

I'd bet money you coulda built a computer yourself 1.5x more powerful and more storage for the same price.

Paid probably 1600 for mine after going through a few sets of graphics cards.

Over clocked to 4.1 on air and both GPUs OCed to 822

It's gotten a bit buggy and I need to do a full wipe to get rid of some shit and free up disk space. But I'm not so motivated since I don't game anymore. Just use my Mac for audio mixing, composing, and surfing.

Haha paid less for my Alienware than you paid for your ASUS. ;)

I got this laptop because I knew it would last me a long time, plus the occasional game here and there.

    Wait..Alienware laptop???

    Ha..no..your upgrades..very limited still.

I'd never pay over a grand for a laptop.

Haha as for video cards my laptop has one on the motherboard and an external one, so I do have an outboard video card.

I seriously doubt that I could build a laptop with the same specs and features that my Alienware has.

My upgrade options are in no way limited for a laptop. Not comparing any of this to a desktop, completely different beast.

Personal preference I guess. Hard to find a laptop that will last you for many years without lagging too much for under $1,000,

I hate laptops haha for that reason.

    Overheat
    Can't OC easy
    Can't upgrade easy
    Don't last long
Too small and if big,,then too big
    Never enough power

    Hate them. :p

Never got the appeal for one.

He offered to trade me and I said no:anonymous:

Like I said most HDD are 7200rpm nowadays. There are 5200rpm ones out there still but not very common, although I guess Ben's could have one due to his being older. There are 10,000rpm drives available, but I don't think they are available for laptops and SSD's are significantly faster and have pretty much put the 10,000rpm drives out of the market due to price per gig being similar. That's why I never mentioned them. While there are better CPU's available running the same socket as Ben's, upgrading CPU's in laptops isn't ideal because it isn't as easy to upgrade the cooling in a laptop. Plus the cost isn't typically worth the gains. Upgrading to a whole new socket is a much better cost per gain ratio, but more or less undoable in a laptop.n Upgrading ram is pointless because like you said the CPU is typically the bottleneck even in laptops.

Basically everything you said is true, just laptops are not the same as desktops, upgrading laptops is just not ideal.

I said the same thing for the longest time! I love having a built desktop!

But I kind of was forced to get a laptop. I've lived in 7 different rooms in the past year. Would be too much of a pain to carry around a full size computer, screen, keyboard, speakers, and mouse that often.

I ask my girlfriend the same question! We're Christian though, but she suggests that I should get nicer clothes other than jeans and a polo. I ask her where it says we have to do that, because God says in the bible to "Come as you are". Not to put on a fake presence... Kind of goes against that in my opinion when you try to tell somebody they have to dress up a certain way for church.

For a wedding on the other hand, I understand. Last thing I want to do is tick off the bride for wearing something she doesn't approve! Haha it's her day after all...
