What wax do you use?

I'm REALLY surprised that only a few people mentioned Zaino. I use it too, and its excellent. Bird crap, bug juice, dirt, pollen - it all just seems to rinse off after a good layer of zaino is put on. The finishing spray (Z6) is great for spring time too where pollen is blown all over. It does great at minimizing the amount of pollen and other dust that sticks to the surface.

1 coat lasts a really long time too. That still doesn't stop me from putting several coats on a year.

I've heard very good things about Zaino's ability to protect paint and I've heard it also lasts a long time. The negative things I have heard were related to application (long cure times, won't cure in high humidity / dew conditions, etc.). I have personally never used it, but lots of folks swear by it. It seems like most people either love it or hate it.

 

Not sure where you heard those things, but when I read the instructions when I got my Zaino kit, there were no stipulations as to how warm or cold it could be to apply it. The cure times did depend on the temperature. But it doesn't matter whether you apply it in direct sunlight (which used to be a no-no with wax, not sure if it still is with certain kinds or not) or the shade.

 

The older Zaino had a long cure time. The product they have been selling for the past couple of years has a quick cure (ZFX) for multiple coats with a long full cure. I used it on my Silverado... once. I had the truck 3 years and only just before I sold it did I see that I should do it again. I'm in Northern California and the weather is pretty mild by comparison. It just kept going... and going.

Not sure what I'm going to do on the Taco... the SysOne seems easy and quick. Probably give it a shot due to time constraints.

 

There were cure time issues with temperature and high humidity. So if you waxed your vehicle in the late afternoon and parked it outside, the stuff wouldn't cure because you'd have high humidity or dew forming.

Other waxes need no cure time. They take about 20 minutes to apply and you're done. Park it outside, and dew, rain, whatever, have no effect. If you don't have a garage and your paint protection takes hours to cure, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise if a t-storm comes in or heavy dew forms on the surface.

However, I just went to the Zaino website and it appears that they have an accelerator that speeds up the process, possibly negating the worry I mentioned. Here is an excerpt:

Meguiars 3-Phase Wax System. Then take a 2 hr break, then do the Meguiars NXT wax on top.

Goes on like melted butter and is extremley easy to get off.

 

So, System One... I have a few questions about this product so anyone please chime in with your opinions...

1) Is this product (the wax) appropriate for regular car care or is it mainly aimed at restoration of paint.
2) How many coats of this product do folks use.
3) Since this product contains wax, does it haze over after several applications and time like the regular wax?
4) How long does the wax last (lets water bead right off, not just bead) of course providing I'm not getting stuck in mud holes.

I believe I have a clue where to buy the stuff and am looking for my first coat of wax.

Yea, I have not seen any Cons to using System One and I'm glad to hear a second coat does not add more, so I guess the product is fine with a single coat. And to know the water beading continues that long, great and I will probably wax every 2 months or so. Not a big fan of that kind of work. When I was in my 20's sure thing, but nearing 50 it's not my favorite thing to spend time on, damn did I just say that out loud?

I get a feeling that car wax is pretty much like the engine oil debate. If you change your oil every 3,000 miles, the engine will probably go 250,000 miles minimum without a hitch, even if you use the cheap regular dino oil. Everyone in my family has always just used Wal-Mart oil and wallah- all of their Toyotas have 200,00-260,000 miles with no issues.

Likewise, I've pretty much only used either plain-jane turtle wax ( in the green bottle) and Meguires old fashioned caranuba wax. I wax the cars and truck about once every 2-3 months and after 14 years the Taco still looks new. Same with the other cars.

I will say that I did pick up a few bottles of Mequires camper wax, which is basically a thicker version of their regular car wax. That stuff seems to make a nicer shine. But its probably simple because there is more caranuba in it to start with.

Anyhow, that's sort of my theory anyway.

Not looking forward to washing, claying, and waxing my truck...last time I did it, it took like 5 hours....

And I'm sure if I knew how to use my random orbital buffer that has been sitting in my garage for around...2 years...it'd take a looooooooot longer to clean haha.

 

I agree with your theory regarding longevity and protection, but as far as ease of application goes, SYSTEM ONE is tough to beat. Wipe on, wipe off, no crusties, hazing or staining.

...and if its easier to do, you'll do it more often and in the end, you'll have better protection for your paint.
