Noisy belts...

The belts on my truck are always making noise and it drives me crazy. What can I do to fix the problem? I tried belt lube and I honestly think it made the noise even worse ha ha. Any suggestions?

Since our trucks do not have auto belt tensioners on them, you may want to adjust the components so that your belts are tight. I still can't believe that they don't have belt tensioners on them. Oh well.

 

ARe you sure its the belts sqeeking?

When are they making noises? All the time? Only at startup?

THe A/C idler pulleys on the 3.4L are known to go bad. THe bearings go bad and start squeeling. Also, any of the bearings on any of the pulleys can go back. You need to determine if you have bad bearings and which ones.

If you're changing the belts, take the time to spin each pulley by hand and FEEL them. Feel for rough spots and if they're loose. Pulleys should spin smoothly and freely without any play side-to-side.

 

When there's 3 belts....I can only imagine its cheaper to make the components adjustable versus a fixed component & additional pulleys involved.

 

My belts squeek all the time. It makes my truck sound like a piece of crap...for one, its a toyota and two....we all know toyota is the BEST If they squeek all the time, is it definitely the belts?

 

If you are getting new belts I would recommend spending the extra couple of bucks for Gator Back belts. I started using them in my old 88 Wrangler and refuse to use anything else since. They seem to last forever, grip well, and never slip.

 

Nope, only if the truck is running. If it's squeeks when truck in not running, you may have mice.

99% sure it should go away with new belts. Although, it could be a pully or tensioner bearing. Unlikely though.

 

Adjust them first. I went through this exact thing a while back.

 

Are you reading any of the responses? Are you doing anything to look at them?

To add:
Belts don't normally squeel or squeek on their own. When belts squeek, it's usually when they're too loose and they squeek at 'startup' when the torque load is higher.

 

they do squeel on there own. When there old and stretched out..I can't count how many ive done on rangers and such, and the squeel went away after a new belt, but they also have auto tensioners.

Try new belts and see if that works out, just make sure to check everything while your there to make sure its no pulleys or anything.

You have to take the belts off.

You mentioned you were gonna change the belts this weekend...(see below)

So that'll be the perfect time to check all the bearings/pulleys.

 

My point exactly...the weekend hasnt even gotten here yet and you are asking me if I am doing anything to check things out. I had read all the responses but since I hadnt taken the belts off yet, there was no progress to post. Im not gonna have time this wknd but possibly during the week. Sounds good! If it is a pully, how much do they cost to replace and is it difficult? I will hopefully find time to do it during the week, but if its too pricey, I will have to wait...
