Then get another job! That's what this job IS. You don't have to know every detail but the majority don't know the basics. The models from year to year don't really change that much. Might be a little more difficult on a body style change year or something but still. 90% of them don't know the difference between the sport and TRD for example. Or like a pervious poster mentioned, a Toyota salesman thinking the Tundra is a Titan.

If I worked at a Toyota dealership, I'd know the trucks but nothing about the cars. I'd take the time to learn them. Learn information, more knowledgeable, more sales.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
    When buying my wife's 2013 4runner.

We had stated we wanted to buy the car and trade in our 2011 4runner so we were negotiating. The sales manager comes out saying we can get the car for $36k and asking what kind down payment we can do.

SM: can you put down 20k?
Me: giving him a strange look, Ah no....
    SM: what about 10k?
Me: I don't have anything for a down payment.
    SM: what about $300?!
    Me: Nope nothing...
SM: Ok ill see what we can do with your trade in and 0 down.

He later comes out with a paper valuing my 2011 which was 4x4 with only 13k miles at $17.5k. I ask him about it saying that there is no way in hell my car is worth that much.

At the end of the day I get the new 4runner OTD with 0 down 4% and trade in valued at $27.5k(about $8k more than i owed) along with all my old warranties refunded and credited towards the new vehicle.

2 months ago I went to the Toyota dealership to get a dimmer switch checked out and I walked outside to look at the Scion FR-S. Salesman comes up and I start tell in him how it sucks that Toyota hasn't made many rwd sports cars in awhile. He says "yeah I wish they still made the civic...". I smiled and said "u mean the supra?". He says "no the civic, they still make the supra...". I said "OK I'm gonna go check on my truck...". Retard.. Also this dealership is right beside a Honda one lol

When I got my truck I didn't even have it payed for until 2 weeks later and I told the dealership I would pay them when I got the money... I was out the door with the truck the same day I looked at it and picked it up without even paying them more than a 500 dollar deposit

Years ago, went with the wifey to test drive a new car(still recall ALL of the salesmen were wearing huge gaudy diamond rings:eek:). they had some young schmuck drive with us and upon returning, we said we'd think about it, you have our info. next day the wife calls me from work and says "guess who just called, the salesman from yesterday, he wanted to know if we were still interested. when I said NO, he said, 'OK, well can I still call you sometime?'" Needless to say we didn't return, lol:p

After we bought my wife's Highlander in January of 08 I went back 6 months later to the same salesman to buy my Tacoma...

Me: "I like the truck, but I don't like the color(Desert Sand Mica)"

Salesman: "This is a demo truck, so it's cheaper in price and it's the only
demo we have. If you like, I can show you a new truck and
you can pick out the color you like for about $6000 more...Or
you can get this one for $6000 less and learn to like the
    color.

    Me: "I'll take this one."

That's funny. When buying my other truck we haggled hard and settled on a price. When we sat down and I said we're putting down $10K the dude left for a minute and I thought for sure he'd return and backtrack on the price. Luckily when he did come back he said we're good to go.

"Does this have the... YEP, TRD OFF ROAD PACKAGE! It's gonna be gone quick, you better jump on this deal"

    Me: "I'll take my chances"

When I go to the dealers though I don't play the waiting game, the first thing I say when I walk in is "I'm leaving in 30 min so make it quick"

When i was out pursuing my tacoma back in 09, the Nissan dealer that we drove past had brought in a used 06 with 45k on it. They had it in the back and had not even cleaned it or serviced it. Some new salesman came up to us.
Me: How much are you asking for this one?

    Salesman: 19,900

Me: Here is a piece of paper, write that down and sign it.

We ended up talking him down another 200 bucks cause we would have to stay the night so they could service it and then i drove it home the next day.

Dad was jealous of my Toy and decided he wanted one of his own a couple years ago. Mom spotted a fresh trade in at my local Toyota dealer so I offered to stop by and take a look, see if it was worth their time to come over and see it.

I called first to let the dealer know I was coming by (it was going to be close to closing time) and asked the salesman a few questions - mainly what sort of Tacoma was it? SR5? TRD? He said he didn't know for sure. Understandable, it just got traded in, maybe he hadn't seen it in person yet. Then I asked if there was a diff lock button on the dash...he didn't know what that was.
I pulled into the lot and spotted the truck, parked my truck a few spots away and started inspecting this truck...opened the hood, was crawling underneath... Two salesmen approached me and asked if I had any questions. I told them that I had called earlier and was just checking it out for my dad. One of the salesmen started to try to explain something to me while the other went to find the salesman I talked to on the phone...he was talking very slowly on account of me being a girl and all  ...and it took me a minute to catch on but he was trying to say that it had an AAL. But he wasn't calling it an AAL, he couldn't think of the right words, and he was making it sound like something really expensive and magical. I finally asked him if he meant that it had an add a leaf. Oh! Yeah! Thats it! The salesman that I had talked to on the phone finally showed up so he jumped in on the conversation. I pointed out to him that it did not have a diff lock button and was therefore not a TRD. I asked a few more questions about the truck - mainly the transmission as it was a manual and I have an auto - and got more stuttering, stumbling responses from them both and one of them started to look at me funny since I was asking very particular questions. Questions a girl would know nothing about right?

I finally just got tired of them both and pointed at my truck and said "that ones mine." They both realized that I knew more about the trucks than they did (thanks TW ;) ). They handed me the keys and said they'd be inside if I needed anything.

In all fairness, the guy was new to toyota...

(When shown an SR5 for the test drive)

Me: "That's great, but what I'm looking for is the TRD Off Road"
Him: "Yes, that's what this is, the TRD"
Me: "No, this is an SR5, I'm looking for the TRD OR trim package, there's a difference."
Him: "Oh, well, let's test drive this and I'll see what we have in stock"
    (after the test drive)
Him: "Ok, we have one TRD, they're pulling it around now"
Me: Great, and it's the TRD Off Road? And not the Sport?"
Him: "It's a TRD, there's only one TRD package."

It was here that I schooled him on the trim packages a bit and made them order me the TRD OR that I wanted.

Furniture and cars are the two things that are guaranteed to be marked up a whole lot.

I asked the used car salesman for a TRD offroad 2005 or newer, color doesn't matter. He showed me a Ford Explorer (truck style) and says it has all the same features.

I laughed, and he said "Why does everyone laugh when I say that?"

Many years ago a friends dad asked him to find a used work car. My buddy asked if I wanted to help him shop one Saturday. I asked what he was looking for and my buddy said his dad just wanted a basic mid sized sedan that he could fit into (Dad is 6'4") for a short commute - a Accord, Camry, etc.

At one lot as we were driving through a salesman walked out to our car and started talking to us through the rolled down window:

    "Whatcha looking for?"

    "Accord or a Camry"

    "I've got a Tercel"

"NO, that won't work. My dad is a big guy, needs a bigger car"

    "It's got a big seat!"

We both just broke up laughing and drove off....

I showed a dealer my maintenance log book for my tacoma. He said "those log books mean nothing, because people almost never do maintenance on their vehicle."

I was stunned. I had everything. I mean everything, listed in the book. Dates, parts, fluids, mileage, engine tests, receipts, ect.

When I was up in NorCal, I was just doing some research on Tundra's and 4Runners, while my truck was in for service...

As I'm crawling up underneath a Tundra to check out the suspension...
SM: Hey there! What Can I do for ya?
Me: Whats the difference between a Tundra Suspension and a Tacoma Suspension?
SM: Well, The tundra's tow capacity is 10,000, while the Tacoma's is only like 3.
Me: Ok, First of All, that depends on the package you buy. Secondly, MY Tacoma has 6500. And Thirdly, You didn't answer my question.
Me: Just for the record, I'm not buying a vehicle today. End of Story
SM: Well, lets get you in one of these and see if I can change your mind
    Me :roll eyes:  Ok

Later On, while test driving(About halfway through this conversation)
Me: whats the stopping distance on this thing? (Tundra Limited 5.7)
    SM: It stops pretty fast
Me: :Sigh: Ok, Whats the rollover rating
    SM: 2 Stars
Me: 2 Stars? You mean 4 stars
SM No Sir, they don't make a truck with over a 2 star rating
Me: My Tacoma has a 4 star rollover rating
SM: Son, I've been selling cars for over 25 years now, I know what I'm talking about
Me: :shit eating grin: Really? Then why does that sticker on the window next to you have a 4 stars on the rollover rating
    (Awkward silence)

Oh, and the stopping distance thing was because I'd asked about aftermarket stuff and the guy asked why I'd change the suspension at all, so I slammed the brakes and pointed out that the nose dives like crazy...

Me: See that, with a little stiffer suspension, you can stop that, as well as possibly shorten the stopping distance, weight ratio's all that jazz
SM: Why would you change the TRD Suspension
Me: Because it sucks for what I use my truck for...
SM: I don't know what you're doing then, a Tacoma can run BAJA
    Me: ...a Stock Tacoma
SM: Yes Sir, they do it all the time
ME: A stock Tacoma...with the TRD shocks...runs BAJA?
SM: Yep! Pretty sure TRD won BAJA last year or something
ME: This Test drive is Over, how the F do I get back to the Dealer now.

Told the Sales Manager with the Sales guy standing right next to me, "I might be tempted to buy a vehicle here, I really liked the Tundra, But Doofus over here ruined any chance of that." " What do you mean, Sir?" "If this guy had even once just said 'I Don't Know' Instead of talking out of his ass, I may have been impressed"...Sales Manager Whispers "Sorry dude, he's an older guy, and one of our worst sellers"

    I can see why...trust me.

The Only thing the Sales guy ever said that made me laugh was when I said I'd buy a base model and upgrade it because I learned my lesson buying a Tacoma with all the bells and whistles and the guys gets me into the Tundra Limited and goes "Well, this here is the base model with a boat load of Gucci upgrades" lol
