I've watched this thread for months and months and the same thing keeps coming up over and over again. Folks buy a rifle and then they put some cheap red dot or scope on it. When someone says that Primary Arms sucks or something along those lines - all these people jump in and say - it's great, blah, blah, blah.

The simple fact is that there are two types of weapons: (1) weapons intended for shooting at the range, plinking, and all other sorts of misc. related activities; and (2) weapons intended for self-defense and / or hunting.

If your weapon falls in the first category put whatever you want on - heck, take an empty roll of toilet paper, spray paint the cardboard black, and duct tape it to the top of your rifle.

If your weapon falls in the 2nd category you don't have to spend over $1k on a quality optic - but, don't be pissed when some of us do and don't even try to argue that a Primary Arms red dot is just as good as an Aimpoint T-1. They're not and they never will be...if you think they are...bring your primary arms to me and I'll demonstrate why they aren't in about 5 minutes.

What you actually need to do is think hard and long about what your going to be using your rifle for - quality iron sights (let me reiterate that - quality) have worked for a long, long, time and are really effective at allowing you to kill things at fairly close range (i.e. iron sights are damn good for self-defense in the house).

If you want a red-dot, holographic sight, magnified optic, etc. consider what you are going to be using your rifle for and save up for what is going to work best for you. EoTech's are great, Aimpoint's are great, Nightforce makes a fantastic 1-4 short scope (1-4 x 24 NXS).

The bottom-line is that if you're going to use your rifle to defend yourself, your family, or use it to hunt...you want something that is going to give you performance and accuracy every time all the time. If your life is on the line the last thing you want to realize is that your red dot or holographic weapon sight lost zero and you just sent two flyers by the guy lobbing lead in your direction.

Does it matter if you spend just as much or up to 2x the cost of your rifle - no, it doesn't and in some cases you can't. I have a custom made DDM rifle that has a S&B on it...the scope doesn't come close to costing as much as the rifle...and it's a damn expensive S&B.

If you can't afford what you want right now - save up or look at used options. A used T-1 that someone purchased 3 months ago is probably going to rock and roll - and Aimpoint, EoTech, Nightforce, etc. all have great customer service and warranties.

    - Mark

thankfully this one is already built ha. not my fault i tried to buy at the wrong time.

to everyone who posted, i really appreciate all the comments and suggestions. in the future i will be bale to afford a better optic, but for now going the cheaper route will do for the range, target practice. if its not working and not aligning well then ill ditch it. for some iron sights. thanks again guys for the info!!

Yea my AR is way tacticooled out for the range, but that's what I wanted for it. I have a few other goodies I reach over the AR for when SHTF.

I think aim point really help closed the gap between the expensive optics and the cheap ones with the PRO. You can find them at 399+shipping online. If I built a second ar that would be the optics of choice.

How many of you guys collect retro 20rd mags. My buddy gave me the colt and Adventerland and I got the universal at a flea market for $15. All are well worn and from what I could find Vietnam era? Another buddy gave a Gov. issue 30rd Okay mag. Just trying to find some history.

Depends on the era. currently Brownells. Has been many different floor plates over the past 57 years... My favorites are the Labelle mags, but I've swapped over to Magpul. (Magpul also has an NSN)

I have a viet nam replica I'd like to have a original colt 20 rounder for instead of the floorplate swapped one I have now. Colt's tend to be Okay mfg.
