Very tragic for a profession that gives so much and asks for so little in return. My prayers go out the 19 families.

 

I think you can only do so much to save someone's life in that situation... Those are pretty extreme conditions o have a forest fire pass over top of you...

 

yeah it stops you from getting burned but does nothing about the fire using up all the air in the area..

 

I thought they usually carried oxygen tanks on themselves?

 

Don't remind me... Although it doesn't help that I fubar'd my driveshaft last night. I just drove it for 2 hours on the freeway though and it did alright. Doesn't shake nearly as bad as the 1st one did. I had the first one balanced though and thought about throwing it on, but I don't know just how balanced it is. Should work fine for lower speed stuff like around town, but not sure about the freeway. He had to add a lot of weight to it to get it to balance. I put the vid of me killing it in my build thread.

 

Alright, got a new pilot bit, a new grinder disk, a flat cut off wheel, square tubing and a full face welding helmet. Project bed rack part 2 starts tomorrow, I'm thinking I'm much more prepared this time.

That flat disk was like 3 bucks. Why the hell didnt I get it the first time

Hi folks, I thought I'd chime in here.

No, we do not carry any air cylinders on us when fighting wildland fires. Also, our fire shelters do not come equipped with such a device. Through my training I've been taught if you an withstand the extreme heat (up to 400f) in the shelter, you might survive (albeit with potentially significant burns). Overall, there is about a 50% survival rate when face with a shelter deployment... most deaths due to wind ripping the shelter off... some due to giving up.

In general we do everything we can to remain safe on the fire line, weather is our biggest risk though, and when faced with extreme fire behavior, things can change quickly (I've been fortunate enough to have a good lookout/squad boss to avoid potentially dangerous situations).

As Greg said, no, they don't carry air for a number of reasons - one being they already usually carry 45+ lbs over all kinds of terrain, as well as fire boots (5+ lbs combined or more)... Lots of gear already.

Pretty much what Konsta said the fire retardant material works but a wild land fire will remove all the oxygen from the air. Kinda interesting why a lot of them done have ventilators or something. I would get my own if I was to work them. Honestly.

I'd do TOWT if I was you. Probably my fav trail we did other then elephant hill. Had a blast with mike.

And I'd still plan on it. I'm not making any promises.
