Ahhhhh sweet bro!

 

Had an adventurous trip trading my motorcycle for a welder. I put the bike on a trailer and ratchet strapped it down like normal. About a quarter mile up the road a strap breaks and the bike tips over and ALMOST flipped the trailer. Luckily the trailer came back down with the bike on it. I had another ratchet strap so I picked it up and strapped it again. Another quarter mile down the road I'm talking to my roommate on the phone about the broken strap, a second strap breaks and I see the bike pitched over some, but didn't fall. The wheel chock held this time. Put on my last ratchet strap on and went on my way. Made it 40 miles without breaking any more.

Unload the bike and the trader dude takes it for a spin. I'm talking to his old man while I wait. 10 minutes passed and he just gets back. Said he got locked out of his girlfriend's house where he was trying to show off the bike. He put his step son in a headlock or some shit over the deal. He can't find the cap for the welding gas bottle so he takes my motorcycle up the road to the storage shed to look for it. The cops pull him over on the bike and arrest him for the headlock incident and no motorcycle license. I had to go ride the bike back. I just parked the bike at the house, grabbed the welder, and left while the dude was heading to jail. Lol.

Needless to say, I ordered some expensive ass ratchet straps...

Holy tits man that's one hell of a day, out of curiosity what brand were the straps that kept breaking?

 

The good one was a "quick strap", the other one was some cheap junk from menards. I bought some nylon webbed ones instead of polypropylene. Nylon is better for abrasion resistance and they are quite a bit thicker.

 

I just bought smart straps and I don't like them very much the rachet is pretty shitty

 

Probably why mine broke lol. The clip that locks the ratchet wheel in each position broke and came out of the handle. I had a good amount of tension on it but nothing more than what it was used for in the past. I used it on a bike 150 lbs heavier and it did fine.

Straps do seem to break a lot. I've been driving on the highway a lot lately and been seeing a ton haha

I would go with 3 straps for that. Just to be safe.
