This tells me you don't understand the mechanics of either one (firearmr, tazers or K-9's) nor are you considering the potential of a failure. Shit is different when you understand how tazers work (and often DON'T work) and how much damage a dog can do quickly. The spread required to properly taze a dog is nothing short of miraculous to stop a threat when tenths of a second count.

Do you like to let your dogs roam w/o being leashed? Do you see yourself being the owner of a recently shot dog? If so, that is the problem. If owners properly control their dogs then we're not forcing anyone to make a decision. You force me to make a decision involving my health and safety then you have zero room to question the decision I made in a split second. You don't like that though, put your dog on a leash at ALL times and control that dog.

So now LEOs are expected to carry a hot shot in addition to a tazer, OC spray, firearm, backup firearm, cuffs, coms.... and then make the right decision and properly apply that tool in 0.002 seconds time when lives are on the line? At some point you just have to step back and apply common sense to a situation.

So we are back to training the officers how to deal with the situation differently. I only watched the video once (could not watch that again) but if the officer would have remained calm, stopped making sudden movements, the dog most likely would have kept a distance. You see this in the beginning when the dog gets out. The dogs is barking but keeps about a 3' distance from the officers. When the one officer begins to attempt to get the leash is when things went bad. If everyone was calm and the dog stayed at a distance a tazer could have been used.

I know, I know - heat of the moment and it is hard to get multiple people to act the same way. So many variables and I am sure only so much can be trained to. Just a bad video altogether.

I haven't watched the video nor will I but from the sounds of it the problem became a problem long before the LEO ever went for a leash. Sounds like the owner was given numerous verbal commands that he refused to follow and felt like fighting 'the man' and his dog paid the ultimate price. Not sure how training can prevent ever tragedy. A little culpability from the owners of pets would go an AWFUL long ways though. They want to be irresponsible and then point the finger at everyone else when something happens to their pet that THEY were responsible for. I see it all the time, people their dogs roam around off of leash when there's a clear leash law because they're dog 'would never do that' yet what's the FIRST thing people say when something happens? He's never done that before! No shit. Keep them controlled and you won't ever have to learn a tragic lesson.

This is something that you can't know. As a seasoned officer you get to know when a bad guy is making movements that will indicate whether he's gonna run, fight, pull a gun etc. You can't know that with a dog.

Dogs are going to be far more unpredictable then people and have less ways of showing what they intend to do then a human does. We are trained to observe and respond to human behavior, not so much K-9 behavior.

Ost I agree with that statement 100%. I am looking at what could have been done since these steps were not taken in the video. The should have never been there recording the scene with his cell phone. That was where it went wrong. He did put the dog in the car before going to the officers, which I believed they requested he do. However the dipshit left the windows all the way down.

Arapahoe County and Littleton where i live all have leash laws. The only place you can have your dog off lease is in a designated dog park. My wife carries pepper spray when we walk just in case a dog comes running at us. So many people do not understand the problem with this. "Oh he is friendly." Does not mean my dog is. And well Tango does not like other dogs. So many times have we been walking and I hand both dogs to my wife while I go run interference with the loose dog. So far (knock on wood) I have been successful with a loud, sharp, NO, GO HOME! The NO is pretty basic and gets the dog to stop in his tracks. I think my fat ass scares most dogs too.:)
Aaron you are right and I guess it would mean another entire round of training to understand K-9 behavior. Which no agency has funds for not to mention you guys are already overloaded with policy and political correctness.

wow the comments on the video are how can say? some good and some just pointless.
Im a dog person (even if I wasnt),if a dog came at me and I was carrying no way would I open fire on it. There are other ways to defend yourself without the first thing being shoot it . And the dog in the video was not a threat to anyone until they made him a threat.

If u had a wild, larger dog coming at you and your adrenaline is flowing, how can you say you would not open fire? What ways would you defend yourself? We can train, and train over and over again but every situation will be different.

hell even if you taze a dog these days you get scrutinized by somebody.

i just hate to see a dog get put down that way because the owner is a fucktard.

    That is good news.

Glad to see the sheriffs in this state standing up for the people (as they have before).

In this specific case I see no reason why I would have shot the dog, it didn't come in contact with anyone, it jumped around but never came close to actually causing harm. Other ways would have been to literally kick it, but that would require it to have been within range of kicking it which the dog wasn't in this case. My first instinct would is to punch things, in your case Im sure you could with no problem have punched a dog in the face and knocked it out. It sounds ridiculous but I wouldn't have fired in this case. So you think if the dog would have bit the officer the other officers would open fire on the dog while it was biting the officer? Im sure they would not have opened fire to not risk shooting him. They would use other means of getting it off. They panicked like many people would have. But I would expect someone like an officer to be trained in adrenaline rushing situations and have handled the situation a lot better. Carrying is a big responsibility to anyone, picture civilians carrying and shooting every time they panicked.
