I wonder where the vote would stand in this thread if/when the ballot comes out in my county for the referendum proposing the secession of Northern CO from the rest of CO.

I'm in Weld and I'd be all for it with one caveat.

Why should we have to rename our state? I say Denver and the like rename their state to Calirado or East California or something.

In all seriousness though, there are probably a million unintended consequences to something like that. We probably wouldn't care much for most of them.

Seems that's how we get in trouble with almost all new legislation. The unintended consequences...

No, it's cool Sean, he already told you... he KNOWS how he would handle the situation and condemns others for their actions in situations he KNOWS how he would react in.

I hate to see it to but the fault doesn't lie with the person shooting the dog so scrutinizing their choice is a waste of energy IMO. The real fault lies with the dog's owner and it just seems like he's getting a pass because the person pulling the trigger was wearing a uniform.

I would pay top dollar to see you demonstrate this and with proper waivers can probably even arrange it.

The whole premise of your armchair quarterbacking is irrelevant if you're unable to produce a better method that ends the threat and doesn't require bodily injury to do so. Why should I have medical bills, be in pain and possibly worse because you are unable to control your dog as the law requires?

You know what would make things really interesting? Bring the Panhandle of Nebraska in on it. Growing up there I can tell you that everyone HATED that our laws were made by those in the state capital 8hrs away who had no idea what was happening in Western Nebraska. Most of us considered ourselves honorary Coloradoans anyway. This would bring in even more farmlands and more good folks who 'get it' to help a new state thrive.

It's amazing on internet forums how many people want to argue about things they know nothing about. The most hardened of criminals who grew up on the streets fighting are reduced to sobbing babies begging for mercy by an 80lb GSD and you think you can punch one as if it's never been tried before? Sure bud.

1: "but never came close to actually causing harm"

Orly? When the dog jumped towards the officer that wasn't near harm range?

2: "Other ways would have been to literally kick it"

Lets say you did this..now he has your foot and is tearing that apart. Still a good idea?

3: "So you think if the dog would have bit the officer the other officers would open fire on the dog while it was biting the officer?"

Probably not, given the close proximity of other officers. One officer had a clear shot w/out anyone directly in front of him..

4:"They would use other means of getting it off"

What would you suggest? Given the high adrenaline rush you aren't thinking of every option available...especially when it's last second and time is of essence.

5:"But I would expect someone like an officer to be trained in adrenaline rushing situations and have handled the situation a lot better"

That's just it. You CAN'T train for every adrenaline situation. Every situation will vary with the different variables that come into play. Public safety / officer safety / where the threat is / how the threat responds to various verbal commands etc. with a animal, you can't judge how they will respond.

I don't think the officer wanted to shoot the animal...heck, it's almost as though he had given the dog a second chance after it stopped to smell the grass. The officer attempted to control the situation by controlling the dogs leash, but the dog wasnt going to have that.

Look- I love dogs just as much as the next guy, but unless you were in that situation you cannot judge their actions. IMO- the officer acted accordingly and when the investigation is complete, he will be founded as justified.

Honestly, succeeding from the state would be just as difficult. It's more a show of hands drawing a line to show that folks have had enough of the BS. I'm just saying that if we're throwing out hypothesis here that would have a chance at success that's what I would do.
