Well I want to know how many people have driven their truck aggressively and have tires bigger than 31s driving on the same ole steering that have broken tie rods. I want to know how much our inner tie rods can take and how tall a tire.

I'm only gonna get 33s but can't decide to upgrade my steering or stay with them till they break.

Don't take offence to this but that sounds like a dumb idea. I'm thinking breaking something in the steering is bad at any speed. Don't half ass anything

Tie rod can break on any size tire... But mostly you'll start seeing them around 35"s... But it depends how you wheel, you can get away with no broken tie rods but it is unlikely. Tie rods are cheap, $35 for an outer (which is what breaks). Make sure you have a pipewrench. You'll thank me later. Upgrading the steering is really a bad idea on the 2nd gens, because it leaves breaking to a more expensive part ( the rack ).

Damn. Some excellent knowledge there to consider, Mr. TT

Walking away with knowledge for myself. Now I'm worried about my 35's?

It's great knowledge I learned from a close friend who has experienced 31-37" tires on regular IFS, mid travel, and long travel, upgraded steering, and stock steering. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-builds/223362-2005-bulletproof-taco-1-ton-sac.html

I wouldn't worry about normal driving conditions, I am talking about wheeling on the trails, rocks and trails mainly (can't speak for desert).

If you leave the weak point at the cheap part (tie rod) this doesn't happen...

Ahh okay. Yeah I do light trails, rocky roads. Nothing extreme with my suspension. Thanks man :)

It still may be worth carrying a spare since it is only $35 (might be a bit cheaper). A broken tie rod will leave you stranded, since you cannot steer :D haha.

Hmm never thought of it like that. I have a lot more plan but we'll see. Thank you, I'll sure remember to throw that pipe wrench in the tool box.
