Its foolish to shoot because you don't know. That would never hold up in court if it was a human.

He didn't shoot because he didn't know...He shot because his less than lethal attempt (the leash) was rebuffed with an attack.

yes, I guess being a humane person to some degree I would only shoot the dog unless absolutely necessary. Not because I cant be bothered with it at the exact moment.

So you'd wait and hope that your reaction would be quick enuf that you'd shoot the dog without putting anyone else in danger...That's your choice, but if you were my partner, we'd be having talk about cover and/or putting in paperwork to find other partners.

I guess a dog being a dog is enough to get it killed, unfortunate.

Id wait till the situation warranted killing an animal instead of killing it just in case.

Dog owner myself. Damn, that's a hard thing to watch. All in all, the owner set himself up, and his dog for failure.

Sucks the dog died. But the real shame is that the dog was with the worthless POS that should have left and gotten to safety rather than taking video like an ass and causing problems. I feel bad for the dog. Owner= Idiot.

i just fucking teared up at the end of this video, Oh man thats so fucked up but... I hate to say it but it was warranted unfortunely the owner didnt properly enclose the dog when he knew he should have and he shouldnt have been fucking with the police investigation... Still i would have gone off on that cop but... The dog made an aggressive move :( Fuck man i really think you need to put a warning up for people that was a pretty heart wrenching thing to see.

My dog would have done the same without a doubt. However, I am a bit smarter than to be filming 6 cop cars with a swat bus at a crime scene. Owner is SUCH and ass.

Unfortunely the person to blame is the owner. Not the officer. He acted in the exact way that anyone would act. If i had a gun and a rotty was coming at me like... Id have to shoot him to protect me. It would be fucking hard but id have to. :( Stupid ass owner put that dog in that position.

Clearly the best course(s) of action, as stated earlier in this thread, is to:

A: Remove the handcuffs from the dog owner, who was displaying an agitated/hostile/aggressive demeanor prior to being handcuffed, so that he can control and secure the dog... Which would include opening and shuffling around in his POV (... and maybe grabbing a weapon from the back seat while he's there), as well as letting him find the keys for the vehicle and turn the vehicle on, so that he can roll up the windows (and maybe start it... flee... run over someone...)

And then... once the animal is properly secured... the owner would OBVIOUSLY be completely willing to come back over to the officers so that he could be re-handcuffed...

    OR

B: They could have pepper sprayed the dog (because pepper spray works on every thing, always)

    or

C: Tasered the dog (because everyone knows taser prongs always hit their target and penetrate the skin enough to be effective)

    or

D: (my personal favorite) The could have just shot it in the leg.

    /Sarcasm

I love animals... I love dogs... But a threat is a threat... It's a shitty situation, but could have been avoided from the start if the owner had just minded his own business...

The cops were not abusing their power, and they were not there with the intention of killing someones dog... They were there for some kind of high risk (SWAT) response, and they found themselves dealing with some prick on the street who wanted attention...

Think about it... the cops were paying no attention to the people holding the camera that this video was taken on... but dude walking with a rot, yelling at the cops, walking within inches of parked PD vehicles... is drawing attention to himself, and he knew it.

No cop wants to shoot a dog...

It's really easy to "armchair quarterback" a situation when you have no idea what's really going on, or what determines reasonable force...

I feel bad for the cop that had to fire...

Dude in that position you dont have time to think, You really think a dog is going to stop an aggressive attack if your fucking with its owner, Dogs dont stop believe me. He was shot and he almost kept going and they shot him again, Pepper spray would piss a dog off, the officer had to make a spilt second decision, Taking the cuffs off the owner would have taken too much time and would have made the dog MORE aggressive by messing with the owner further. this was just a really bad sequence of actions. I think if anyone did wrong it was the owner.

its EXTREMELY hard for me to see that dog get shot, Like i cried im not going to lie, Thats a beautiful... Living dog... He did what his instincts told him, He doesn't recognize a badge. He sees someone mishandling his owner so he did what his instincts told him. :( Poor pup
:( everyone needs to really be careful watching this, it can really wrench your heart.

Just cause' Im curious how much neg rep Ill get for saying this... Officer was 100% in the right. O.C. would only aggravate the dog more, taser has a slim chance of having successful deployment and penetration to be affective (and even if it did... what happens after 5 seconds is up?) baton is out of the question. Dog is an immediate threat on life, no time to uncuff the subject, and even if there was time, he wasnt done being searched. It an officer safety issue. Everyone is quick to blame the police, but if they were wearing those boots and their option was kill the dog or suffer severe bodily injury, anyone would have pulled the trigger. Anyone who says they wouldnt have shot the dog is full of shit. If you were the cop you would have. I probably would have pulled the trigger earlier than he did, but i think his brave attempt to grab the leash was a good thing, although risky.

if you would read some of the posts the majority i think of posts say that the officer did and was in the right, The owner was the fuck up in all this. So... I dont think youll get much neg rep... At least not from me.
