Are you getting bad MPG?

You don't use the gauge to check mileage.

Fill the tank to the top.
Reset your trip odometer to 0

Drive it a while.

Fill the tank to the top, divide the number on the odometer by the number on the pump. That's your MPG.

 

I can never afford to top off, that's the problem. If I could go by the half mark on my gauge, that's what I'd do, but it doesn't work.

 

Use Fuelly. Tracks odometer, gallons added, and price per gallon. It'll give you your mpg if you add 1/2 gal, or 16 gallons.

I've been averaging 19-20 mpg, however towing a truck to VA netted me 12 mpg.

 

How do you get the fuelly thing to show up in your sig like you did? They got a special code? I tried just putting the like in there to my truck's page, but no bueno.

 

Create an account (I assume you did), log in, go down under the "log book" entries and look for the little yellow shield, click the shield and then cut and paste the code.

 

Ah, okay! I'm guessing now that it won't let me just because I haven't fueled up. Said there's no log book becaue I haven't fueled up. I'll do that later when I get the Taco from the inspection station, I guess.

No it won't.

Fuelly doesn't do anything other than what I described.
If you never fill your tank, you will never get an accurate MPG result.


And Fenwick... there's no difference in whether you pump 3 gallons 4 times a month or pump 12 gallons once... you've still spent $48.
And honestly, NOT filling the tank when your gauge doesn't work isn't very smart unless you never drive farther from home than you can push your truck.
You don't know how much is in there, and you don't know how much you are using.

 

same exact mileage as my 99 4Runner. Luckily I didn't buy it for the gas mileage.

just filled up today. 4x4 lifted and running duratracs, still getting 20mpg. Not bad for living on a rock

 

I get like 240 miles on a tank til the light comes on. Pretty crappy, but 80% of my driving is on the highway at 75-80 mph.

That's really good mileage. Which tire model did you have on your truck?

 

I may have neglected to mention it (thought it was common knowledge), you DO have to start with a full tank and good odometer reading when you start using Fuelly. It is BEST to continue filling the tank all the way, but Fuelly does allow for partial fill-ups that won't skew/mess up your overall MPG calculations.

From the staff at Fuelly:

"Fuelly calculates an individual MPG for a fuel-up based on the difference from full. So without a full tank to work with, there's no way to make that calculation. So while you won't get an individual MPG calculation for a partial, it does contribute to your overall average MPG. For that calculation, Fuelly uses total distance and total fuel filled.

Why not use the partials in some way to calculate an individual MPG? Because there's no way to know the tank size without a full fuel-up. Imagine adding three or four partials in a row—your "tank" size would grow with each fuel-up. And the resulting MPG calculation would be misleading. We feel like it's better to err on the side of accuracy and only provide individual MPG calculation when those are based on a preceding full tank."

 

Which means that Fuelly is going to be worthless for Fenwick because he never fills his tank.

You have to start with a full tank, and at some point, you have to fill it again.
At that point, it can calculate a true average over all of the partials.

 

Goodyear Duratrac 265/75/16 load C. I went 347 miles and filled it with just over 17 gallons.
I have a 40 mile daily commute, and Honolulu is ranked pretty high for bad traffic.

 

I been thinking when it comes time to lift get them. Is that a 3" lift you have?

 

Almost 3" in front, and 2" in the rear.
I wanted to go bigger, but most tires in 285 are load E. and it look like gas milage will suffer even more with such a big heavy tire.
