The cops called the man and he knew they were coming for him so he put his dog in the car.. he would have pulled the said gun or said knife then, don't you think?

This guy's take on things is completely at odds with what actually happened. If the owner tried to call off the dog I'm not seeing it in the original video and the dog definitely wasn't moving away when it was shot - it was jumping at one of the officers.

Given the situation and the very short amount of time between the dog getting noticeably agitated and escaping from the car, I don't really see what the cops could / should have done differently. If tasers are such a great idea, why don't we see more threads around here on which taser to buy, where to keep your taser in your truck, etc.? A dog that powerful coming at you is at least as dangerous as a guy coming at you with a knife, and I have no problem with someone shooting a guy attacking them with a knife.

Fault lays entirely with the owner, IMO. Even disregarding the fact that he shouldn't have been where he was and doing what he was doing to cause the situation in the first place, it's his responsibility to secure and control his animal. Not only do I hope he loses whatever lawsuit he makes against the cop and department, I hope there's some kind of animal cruelty or endangerment they can cite him for.

At the end of the day I feel worst for the dog, but also bad for the officer/officers who now have to deal with all the hate directed towards them for what was at the very worst an error in judgement during a perilous situation they shouldn't have been put into in the first place.

Couldn't have answered it better myself, Thank you Jay.

On a side note I do love hearing all over the place people will yell "F$%K to police! They need to stay outta my business! Stupid cops!" Yet if THEY ever get robbed or something they will be the first to scream "Where were you? What took you so long?"

I guess it makes sense (for the dog owner) to wait until there are 4 cops around him and in hand cuffs so he has better odds then. Also one would think if they actually took the cuffs off him and told him to put the dog up, the 4 officers would have their gun drawn on him while they watched him put the dog up.

Anyone that calls this cop "bad" or Out of line or whatever can fuck off cause they have no idea what its like to be a cop. As you know you really do make Split Second decisions that put your life in jeopardy and honestly at the end of the day all that officer is doing is looking to get home and to see his wife and kids or whatever at the end of the day. Hes human just like us and this officer did exactly the right thing, The owner shouldnt have been being an asshole and obstructing an ongoing investigation and he shouldnt have a goddamn rotty with him that isnt propertly housed or "caged" who the fuck leaves a dog like a rotty in a car with the windows COMPLETELY down when you know the officer is more then likely going to put his hands on you. That rotty is going to see that as an offensive move to his owner and act accordingly to his instincts. to make this horrible incident short.

Owner was being an dumbass, He was the one at fault.
Officers did exactly what they were trained to do and made the right decision
Rotty did exactly what his instincts and training told him to do.

I'd still like to see the cops side of the argument, why was the man being detained in the first place?

As mentioned, and of course this information is technically hearsay since there is no evidence, but an earlier post, I think on the first page, had mentioned that this particular person has been a trouble maker in the past, and had caused other issues. Perhaps he said something to the cops that was not heard? We have no way to tell. Regardless of the reason he was cuffed in the first place, he was responsible for his own dog. He seemed concerned enough to put his dog in the car in the first place, so he should have made sure the dog remained in the vehicle. An open window should have been closed. The death of the dog is his own fault. Period.

...this is where i disagree w/ the whole "it's the owners fault not securing the dog in the car"...

    1) the cops were walking toward him, ...apparently he sensed a confrontation, possible detainment, ...he had the good sense to put the dog in the car, to isolate it from the situation

    2) even opening the door to let the dog in might be fairly innocuous to us, but who knows how the cops will interpret that since they are making a bee-line for the guy...

    3) i don't see how there would have been a "safe opportunity" for the guy to roll the window up, or whatever, ...he'd probably have to open the drivers doors, turn the key, etc. (assuming power windows), ..and that could be interpreted as an attempt to flee or obtain a weapon by the cops who have at that point decided to pursue the guy...

from what i can tell, the guy did good by putting the dog in the car, ...but i just don't feel he could've done much more, since the cops were right up on him at that point, and loitering in and around that car would've put the guy in a precarious situation... not to mention, this is the LAPD... they don't have the best reputation to begin with... this incident isn't going to help that..

...do we know it was his music... do we know if he was breaking a law?... do we know if he went over the police line? (did they properly barricade off the area, ...didn't look that way to me...)... did "being a jerk" in this context warrant the heavy hand of law enforcement?... that's where the debate should start...

damn youre either deaf, blind or dumb. yes we know its his music. yes he was being lawfully detained (public nuicance, obstruction......). there is no debate. you want to make it a debate. its all in the video.

if you think its ok, how about you go into a crime scene, have your stereo bumping bluegrass or whatever you listen to, make sure youre right next to officers too. you think theyre gonna be cool with it? you dont think they tell you to fuck off? you think youre gonna be a billy bad ass stick around and not get detained?

...the rush to judgement i've seen here is many saying, in effect; "cops right, guy who's dog shot wrong"... i'm just not sure it's that cut-n-dried, ...so to speak... the guy may have been rightfully detained/arrested, ...but i can't tell that alone from the content of the vid... (and asserted earlier that the vid is not uncut), ...so when in doubt, rather than rush to judgement, i posed some questions is all...
