So I took delivery of my '13 Tacoma yesterday and I notice that even when the air is off it still blows air out the vents. Every car I've owned has done this which leads me to believe there must be a real reason for it. So what is the reason? I mean, when the air is off, why isn't it really off? If anyone can answer me, I'll buy you a Pepsi. :p

Because it still vents into the cabin. Try hitting the recirculate button and drive again

There are a lot of vehicles that work that way. That's not a quirk, that's by design and is common for many manufacturers. If you want to defrost or unfog a windshield, dry air is ideal.

That's correct - the running compressor is pre-drying the air even when you crank up the temp in the winter. Warm/dry air evaporates that windshielf fog the fastest.

Apparently that was deemed less dangerous than the potential for putting moist air against a cold windshield and it icing up on the inside. I agree, I'm all for manual control of things (I hate all the automated 'aids' these days), but by and large, you have to admit that people are generally pretty stupid.

    Muppets..nuff said.

Another plausible explanation is that it keeps the AC compressor working at least a little here and there in the colder months if you live in a climate like New England..which helps prevent the compressor locking up or having leaks in the AC lines if the seals harden.

My wife thought turning the dial to the feet position was a solution to stop air from coming in. She now has the issue of cold or hot feet depending on what the temp is at.

I have not explained this too her yet and don't plan on it :D

One thing about the recirc button. You have to hold it for about 5 seconds to lock it, otherwise it will kick itself off if the temp in the cabin changes.

Uhhh, no. My recirc button stays lit until I press it again. Or turn the truck off.

My 2011 doesn't do that. Maybe a 12 or newer feature?
