Got my first cracked windshield today driving on the freeway  Damn bus got in front of me and kicked up a rock, then went back into it's lane. Got a couple of pics of the crack.

What's my options from here? Never dealt with a cracked windshield before. I figured it's small enough to fix. Should I call the bus company and complain? Should I call my insurance and claim it?

I'm looking up my options but would like to hear from the always insightful TW community.

bus company wont do shit that is one of the risks you take driving on a road. DO NOT CLAIM IT TO YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY. they have those companies that fix small cracks i would try that. simple if you dont want cracks in your window never drive your truck anywhere

I had my first crack after a month of ownership. I called ins. Company and they took care of everything. In FL, windshield replacement is free.

if u are ok with the crack being visable you can go to a glass shop and have them use a special epoxy to fix it from getting worse.

If you want to replace it, i know a good mobile glass guy that will come to you and do the job well and for a reasonable price. PM me and let me know.

I have fixed little star cracks like that many times with the epoxy product found in most auto parts stores. It usually costs $10 or less, and takes about 30 minutes. Compare that to your insurance deductible, and how much (if any) your rate will increase after a claim.

If the crack is smaller than a dime, you should be able to fix it at a local windshield/glass place. Cost from what I've seen here is $25-$55. I'm sure it cost more in HI though =/

Most insurance companies don't charge a deductible for a small crack that Doesn't require replacement. That's assuming you have comprehensive coverage.

I'm thinking if I can get my insurance to cover a repair at a shop that would probably be my best option.

Otherwise I'll buy one of those kits and do it myself.

That star is too big to fix, you will need a new windshield. Make sure to get OEM glass and not generic aftermarket glass.

I've got chips like crazy and recently got a star similar to yours. Seems like Toyota's glass is weak IMO. The star was unavoidable but the chips I felt shouldn't have happened.

Just a bunch of old crap
Glass coverage should be 100% free with no deductible if you have any sort of respectable full coverage. Just call your insurance company, file a quick claim, and they'll usually send out a glass company to replace it at your home or workplace. I get so many windshield cracks, I probably get at least one new windshield a year when the crack starts to run. If the chip is right in your way, just press on it til it cracks and then call your insurance company.

It's better than aftermarket glass, that's for sure.

wife has a subaru forrester that needs replacement at least 1 time a year...2x this year ALREADY...It's always along the bottom edge near the wiper defrosters...I think it's a problem with the heat/cold variance and the glass stress

Go to a 'Free Chip Repair' stand and they can take care of it for free w/ no deductible after confirming it with your insurance.

Insurance companies rather pay a third party a minor fee to repair it than to replace the windshield.

What's wrong with aftermarket glass? It's all the same shit. Other than the fact it does t say toyota on it it's exactly the same. Doesn't look or sound any different or fit different or shatter easier...
