Adding Cruise Control.......

My 94 has me spoiled with the cruise control. The 1996 doesn't have it. Is it feasible to add it? Where would be the cheapest to purchase one? I was contemplating craigslist. About how much should I expect to pay?

What about going through a wrecking yard? I'd sure like to stick with a Toyota OEM cruise if possible, unless you think it would not be advisable?

 

First gen is going to be pretty rough to piece that together.
2nd Gen is much simpler, but the 1st gen needs the stalk, vacuum actuator, and electronics.

Better off going aftermarket.

Check with your dealership to see if a dealer installed cruise control is still available. I put one on my 02 that I had a few years back, it was pretty simple.

 

You could rig up a poor-mans CC that is not as full-featured as stock, but still allows you to take the foot off the go pedal and cruise. Thats what I did.

I installed an actuator from a '99 Camry (no Tacos or 4runners in the yard). I wired up just the clutch mechanism (throttle grabber) in the actuator. Replaced the stock brake light switch with one from that same Camry so that stepping on the brakes de-activates the actuator clutch. Added a switch to the dash. Pretty simple and cheap (don't need a speed sensor, or CC computer, or stalk or new wiring harness.

Its really a constant-throttle CC, rather than a constant-speed CC. Thats the short version of the install. There were some unexpected techie things to overcome, but it works.

 

Lots to think about. once the dust settles from the holiday, I'll get in touch with the dealer and the folks Judojohn mentioned. Tan4X4, I love the way you roll, and most everything I do, I think along your lines, but on this truck, I want this cruise control to be a perfect fit. But I appreciate the input from all of you!
