Approaching my 1st oil change on my 2013 DC TRD Sport 4X4. I was wondering what is the best brand of engine oil. Was kinda leaning towards Mobil 1 or Castrol. Also should I go with synthetic oil or regular?

    Thanks!!

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
You will get different answers no matter where you look, some would say neither of those. I use and love Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. I have a 170k miles and still running. I have no clue as to what does what to your engine, none of the science behind it; just simply that she is still alive.

    Too few to list.
"Best" is subjective. All engine oil sold in the US is mandated to meet or exceed minimum requirements by the SAE. As long as you follow recommended change interval and the correct oil grade, the choice is up to you. Most people switch to synthetic oil and use Mobil 1 as it is widely available almost everywhere though you can use regular oil as well. I'd use the 2 year Toyota Care service. Just make sure you find a good dealership for service.

It's more important that you get a good oil filter. Some of the cheaper oil filters are only good for 3k miles. You'll notice a huge difference in filter size if you compare a Toyota filter to a Fram filter. The Fram is almost half the size.

As for oil, I personally am not willing to spend twice the amount of money for synthetic. I just buy Castrol and change every 5k miles. Change regularly and don't beat the engine and you will be fine.

What brand you use isn't as important as how often you change. Any brand synthetic or Dino oil will be fine for a 5 Mon/5K mi oil change interval. As someone else already stated, the filter is probably more what you should focus on. Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com. if you really care about this topic.

I decided that I wanted to stay with conventional oil for a while but I'll go to synthetic someday, maybe when I hit 10,000 miles. I'm also skipping the free oil changes for two years because it's cheaper to do it myself if you take my time into consideration.

A quick search at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ and I decided on Penzoil in the yellow jug. Funny that's the same oil my Dad always used when I was a kid. :) Only use Toyota filters too.

Yep my old 97 2.7 had 285K on it when I sold it used what ever was on sale at Walmart and the orange can of doom for the filter. An other thing to ponder synthetic oil is't. It is industry B.S.

Show me an oil that is full synthetic with no petroleum based oil in it. They get away with it with by adding manmade chemicals and won a law suit to say it's synthetic. I'm not saying it’s good bad or indifferent but the vast majority of people have no need for it.

I'm thinking about switching to Amsoil my next change. I'm interested in the supposedly better film retention for cold starts and the extended drain intervals. I want to be able to change only twice a year, spring and fall, so to avoid mid-winter oil changes in the sometimes brutal cold we get up here. Which Amsoil do you use and how far between changes do you go?
