Automatic transmission dipstick. 2003 2.4 liter engine

    Why is it so difficult to access the automatic transmission dipstick?

    I can't even get my hand in there to pull it out

    A lift, some wheels, some tires, some performance, some cosmetic and then audio.
    There is a metal tab that you push out then pull up.

    Exactly what Tim said. There is a small metal tab that sits over the lower area of the dipstick to keep it from just popping out. Push the tab back, and pull on the stick. It should come right out.

    Actually, what I'm trying to say is that the transmission dip stick is hard to get to. On all my previous vehicles, it was easy to get to the stick.

    It's almost as if they don't want you to check the tranny fluid yourself, ie bring it in to the dealer.

    On my 2.7 4-cylinder, its easy to get to. Should be the same for the 2.4, I would assume. Are you sure that you're looking in the right place? On mine, its right below the intake by the 'resonator' tank. You can see the very-reachable red handle in this photo:
