Good decision to buy?

Guess I lucked out on mine then. Found the above truck with 32.7k miles. Bought it with a Leer 700 hard shell, in great condition (don't think it ever saw work as an actual truck or off road use) for $19,999. Book was a little north of $25,000. This was exactly one month ago.

I'm happy.

 

It's missing the front differential and drive shafts! J/K, looks good to me.....nice and clean.

Brad - I wish... 4X4 would be nice. Can't talk mom into one though. Need a truck that drives a little closer to a car .

BTW...nice build & luv the look of the 2012's front bumper! Think you can find me one for about the same $$$ as the '09?

 

Well no need to tell mom about it but a prerunner drives pretty much exactly like a 4x4. Of course 2cnd gens are kinda like a tall Camry compared to the early trucks I grew up with.

But to give you a idea I live in PHX and bought my 06 Tacoma Double Cab for $16,500 I wanna say. Prerunner with 75,000 miles on it.

Even though yours is a Access Cab and has over 100K on it i would say it's a fair price because its an '09

Bottom line; I just can't come to terms with financing a 104K mile truck of any kind, no matter whose brand is on it. Think of it this way; 120k after one year, 140k after two years, and still two years of payments left. Not a happy place to be. I've decided to bail on this one.

I have several dealerships searching at this time for one exactly like this but w/< than 60k miles. Probably won't find it at that same price but if I can't then I just won't buy. Perhaps the best advise I had was not to get too attached...makes sense to me now.

I hope to find what I want so I can hook up with you guys again soon...no doubt your here to help...Thanks again!!!

You'll be getting in to $20k price range if you start looking at something that low mileage. Good luck in your search!

Yeah definitely don't rush your decision! If you aren't 100% comfortable with it don't do it. I've learned that lesson many times myself. With that said let me give you some advice. When you do come across that Tacoma that fits your price range, options, miles, etc, RUN not walk to wherever it is because there is someone else out there looming for that exact truck. Maybe even 10 other people. Tacoma don't sit long, even beat up ones. It's not the same as F150's and Silverado's and Rams. You gotta be ready to jump on them as soon as you find them. When I bought my new one I even had to haul ass to get to it because 4x4's aren't as plentiful as prerunners here but when they show up for sale, they sell fast. When I was signing the papers two other people came in to look at the exact truck I was buying. It hadn't even been on the lot 24 hours.

 

Robert - Point well taken. I have never rushed into anything than involves this much money and I certainly do not intend to do so now. In hindsight I wouldn't pay this much money for any pickup truck w/that many miles even if I had the cash.

Example of something that could have set me back big time. I was very tempted in '06 to pull the trigger (as they say) on a S-GT500. Now there was some serious cash (some at 6 figures). I pulled away for a while, several month's in fact, and I'm glad I did because at the time I thought I had the money, at least until the housing crash of '07. That would have been a hard lessen to say the least. As it turned out I found one here in NM and the sales guy didn't have a clue what it was. I bought it for practically nothing (relatively speaking).

I am a firm believer in good things come to those who wait and don't get caught up in the feeding frenzies. And if I don't find one of these trucks exactly the way I want at the price I'm willing to pay then so be it. I'm okay with that.

Pass on that. Work the price down to compensate.
Not a Toyota dealer, they are going to go to the local AP store and buy the cheapest oil filter they can find. My Taco came with a MicroGuard filter, which is a Fram with different paint.

You can buy Toyota OEM filters for $4 each if you buy a box of 10.

 

Rich - Dealership guys can come up with some doozies. They sure fooled me. I'll keep that one tucked away for safe keeping.

When I was searching for mine, I saw several that meet your criteria. Is all about knowing how to search. Example, if you go to autotrader.com, instead of using your zip code, use the one from the closest big city and select to search withing 500mi from that zip code. Then you jump to the second closest. What that does, is to increase the number of hits from private sellers and small car lots, which do not appear when you do the nationwide. Hope you find what you look for!

Looking at a 2010 SR5 Ext Cab 4X4 (might have to change my user name ).

I've noticed some folks opt for 4WD & the TRD pkg. Is this really necessary and if so...why? Pros and cons would be very helpful. Again, new to these trucks but I thought the TRD was a nice option for none 4WD's.

I won't even buy a Toyota with less than 100k on it. mine was at 142when I bout it 2 1/2 years ago and my wife's rav4 was at 98 k when we got it 1 1/2 years ago. they still ain't good and broke in yet I don't think(Sept for the non greasable. u joints on my truck but they're gone now and greasable) at 173k
