Wow, I went to sleep and woke up to an explosion, LOL. Thanks for all the info, on both sides of the debate. I'm going to move forward trying to get the Baja. At least now I know everything that's crappy on my new truck and what I should replace in 8 years when things start wearing out. ;)

I'll update here how things go. Hopefully by Wednesday I should have something done. :D

Good thing it only comes with 5125 bilsteins. I dont understand your point if you are just going to sell it off anyway. Then just get a sport or off road and just upgrade that way.

Lol my favorite is when people buy the Baja, replace all the stock suspension, remove the giant Baja decal and the bedside decals. That's a big wtf for me.

Mine are for sale. I did not want them but in Tx they all come with them. I was going to remove them but after thinking about resale I decided not to. One of the reasons I bought the Baja was because I got tired of seeing my truck on the hwy 2 - 4 times on the drive to work. The closest I have seen lately is a red Baja.

Well I have never seen a Baja package and to me it just seems like a ripoff since you can buy most of the suspension in then after market but oh well it is your money and if you do buy it don't take the stickers off since it would just be stupid to do so

Did the OP pick one up yet?

I just recently got one. In fact I'm looking at my window sticker now. The BX Baja package is essentially the TRD OF plus another $5015 less the factory credit of $650...which equates to $4365 net for the Baja upgrades that include:

    • Bilstein HP OF shocks 66mm front w/ eibach reds
    • Bilstein 50mm rear shocks w/ the remote resovoir
    • 16" Bead-lock styled wheels
    • BFG AT T/A KO tires
    • TRD cat-back exhaust
    • TRD badge and Baja graphics

The only thing I wonder about now looking at this, is that I'm being charged the OF package at $3605...which INCLUDES for upgrades to the suspension from the standard platform (as well as wheels, tires, etc). So I started thinking...if I already paid a bunch of money for those off-road package parts, and then ANOTHER few grand on upgrades to those upgrades...shouldn't I get the original parts I paid for as well? Or is it a "difference" of the two? I honestly never paid enough attention to that. Seems to me that the $3605 means that I should at least receive those parts since I paid for them, buying the Baja package just means I bought more parts on top of that.

Anyway...just thinking there. The Baja platform is awesome. I love it. I didn't want to have to go and piecemeal it all myself. No longer have the time, tools, or inclination to do it myself any longer. I've built up a few race cars in the past, and while it was fun and expensive, I just want something I drive out of the box that had some nice upgrades.

So OP if you're thinking about it, don't worry about opportunity cost, because for you it makes sense...just like it did for me. Good luck. The cost association for it in my area (TX) put the MSRP about $38,200 (it had a couple add-ons like side bars, tint, carpet, tow package). USAA/TrueCar pricing put it at around $36,200. The factory employee pricing (I have a brother who works at the factory) put it at about $34500. So that's why I did it...because really with the discount I was getting the Baja package almost for free from that perspective.

It's hard to figure out...I just asked my brother at the plant where my truck was actually built, and he said he wasn't sure either since they don't install either package at the plant. He said that happens at the Gulf States / distributor level

I'm seriously falling in love with the idea of slapping that Baja package on my truck.

Well, I kind of doubt the Baja kit is a waste of money. $1520 for an ICON kit that looks much lesser in quality compared to $1550 for the Baja kit. Both kits come with four shocks and front coils, but the Baja kit has much beefier shocks plus a brake line extension. Brandonxxx's thread DoorDing linked just above points out the details. It seems like a real nice setup. The Baja rear shocks allow some extra extension compared to a 5100 (1.5" more extension). Also the Baja rear Bilstein 5160 shocks are beefier with a remote reservoir.

I looked for some specs on shocks, and it looks like the ICON rear shocks have 1.5" less extended travel than the Bilstein 5160's in the Baja kit. That's a big deal.

I really don't see a better suspension kit for the money. You get 2" of front lift with the Baja kit, I can AAL the rear for lift because you get Bilstein 5160's that extend further than 5100's or ICON. Throw in the buttkicker Bilstein 9100 front shocks with Eibach coils, it's looking like a no-brainer.

The Baja kit seems like a good deal to me, considering Toyota designed this specifically for the Taco, and considering the performance quality of the parts in the kit. I'm looking at $725 (plus $123 shipping) for BudBuilt 4-piece front-to-back skid plates (thanks DoorDing), and $1550 (plus $25 shipping) for a Baja suspension kit. That is only $2425 on the SR5 for great offroad capability, and that's fine with me.

Rear locker probably would be a nice addition. We'll see, the $2425 to upgrade the SR5 should do well. Stock SR5 has done OK for me so far, but there's some roads I won't go on until I upgrade, too rocky.

    just getting started
I was verbally quoted 33.9 for this red Baja just a week ago. I ended up getting an TRD Off Road instead and saving 3800 bucks and only had to drive 70 miles round trip. But still, the 33.9 was a follow up on my offer of 32.5 before taxes etc. Seemed fair enough but 30.1k for the truck I got seemed like a better deal. Didnt need the decal, the baja suspension wont be needed, but the dealer did tell me if I lift my truck I will void my warranty. I will mod a few things cosmetically and that will be it, and I will keep the truck for 10 years like I always do. If I need to go seriously off the road I will take the 3500 with the cummins in it, already beat the shit out of it anyways.

    +1
Also don't forget to mention the increased travel of the front suspension with the Baja kit.

When people are comparing costs of the TRD OR to the Baja, they always fail to add in the cost of the wheels (and lugnuts), tires, suspension installation, and alignment.

Yes, you can add the Baja suspension to a TRD OR or SR5, but don't forget you will still be riding on stock wheels and BFG Rugged Fails.

You will also not have a warranty on anything you add.
