Dr Craig Venter, a multi-millionaire pioneer in genetics, and his team have managed to make a completely new "synthetic" life form from a mix of chemicals.

They manufactured a new chromosome from artificial DNA in a test tube, then transferred it into an empty cell and watched it multiply – the very definition of being alive.

The man-made single cell "creature", which is a modified version of one of the simplest bacteria on earth, proves that the technology works.

Dr Venter believes the organism, nicknamed Synthia, will pave the way for more complex creatures that can transform environmental waste into clean fuel, vaccinate against disease and soak up pollution.

His development also triggered debate over the ethics of "playing god" and the dangers the new technology could pose in terms of biological hazards and warfare.

"We are entering an era limited only by our imagination," he said announcing the research published in the journal Science....

Interesting. Now to explain how it could occur naturally would be the game changer. And answer a bunch of questions for sure.

Stuff like this just sketches me out.
Like said above, its kind of like playing god and IMO should be left well enough alone. Who knows what kind of repercussions there could be if something went wrong/not as expected or the tech got into the wrong hands.

Makes me think maybe there will be a zombie apocalypse! :goingcrazy::infantry:

Creating life is easier than stopping death. "cancer" is a hydra with 10,000 heads that all look different.

I smell a zombie virus brewing

But all joking aside, this is pretty cool IMO...could cure diseases or viruses before they start or get rid of them all together from what I understood! Think of the thankful families and ill people...

you know there is a certain gene sequence in our dna that actually tells our diffenent cells how many times they can reproduce? once they have hit their limit the reproducing gene in the cell just dies. if we were able to isolate and modify that dna code....

    thats a scary thought too.

as far as the enough is enough...lets face it. there is going to be no stopping scientific research in unlocking and understanding our make up. along with the secrets of the universe understanding how we work as living creatures is the biggest mystery we face. being able to understand that as intelligent creatures is, as i see it, our destiny. and when we have reached the pinnacle of research and fully unlocked and understood how we work we will wither destroy ourselves in a spectacular fashion or figure out a way to all live forever.

Pretty interesting no doubt. Lots of people including myself see the down side to this. However, what about the good that can come from this? The one that stuck me was something that could clean the pollution. Us humans destroy the planet with our creations, than make something to clean it up, pretty amazing.

in all honesty the last thing we need to do is cure diseases...over population will most likley be the catalyst to the destruction of the planet, or us. the last thing we need is more people as we approach the carrying capacity of the environment
