I bought a 2013 Taco a few months ago. Double cab, short bed. It's a PreRunner, so it didn't come with a trailer hitch. I personally think it kind of defeats the purpose of having a truck if you don't have a trailer hitch (or 4 wheel drive). The lack of a trailer hitch has screwed me over a few times now. I'm looking to buy a hitch, and was wondering if you guys have any opinions on what brand of hitch to get, or where I should get one from. Thanks!

If it defeats the purpose to be 2wd without the tow package, why the hell did you buy it like that?

    Yes very interesting decision indeed.

OP, anything aftermarket should be okay for moderate towing. If you want you can buy all the pieces to put together the tow package Toyota offers.

I agree with you, but I wasn't paying for all of it. Someone else was helping me out, so I couldn't really be too specific in what I wanted. All my dealership had was dumbed down 2wd's.

I had a Resse hitch on my 2004 for the entire 210k miles I drove it. Easily an 8th of that mileage was with a trailer behind it. You can get a Reese at Tractor Supply and install it yourself in a few hours. The Achilles heel is the light harness. Pretty much all that was available was a plug and play Hopkins trailer light kit which plugs inline with the rear lights unless you were willing to pay for the $150 factory light harness. It would fail easily once every year, I bought at least 6-7 of those kits over the life of the truck, so in retrospect the factory harness is smart money.

My new truck I insisted on a factory tow package with the light harness.

I just bought a Curt from Amazon. Believe me, Amazon beat everyone's price including etrailer. I got a calss III hitch, receiver, wire harness for $190.00 plus tax and free shipping. I ordered everything on a Saturday morning and the complete package was sitting on my door step at 5:00 Monday evening (So Calif). And.....I'll save $$$ installing it myself :D

I just bought a curt class 3 hitch (no ball or mount) with w/plug in wiring for $160 shipped from ebay. I'll be towing various trailers with my 2wd 4cyl auto x-cab, but mostly a 12' covered sled trailer when loaded weighing in at 3k lbs. Its a good idea to put silicone on frame/hitch where they bolt together to seal out rust.
