Coloradoan article "Truck Owners Trend Smoking Out Fort Collins"

Last Friday, I had dinner with some world travelers from Russia, Greece and Switzerland. They have been to many places around the world and noticed the culture of Fort Collins as unique. Being a world traveler myself, I was entertained by how others outside of a community observe my home. I was delighted to hear how impressed they were with the biking culture, asking: How did it all begin? Why is it that the biking community of Fort Collins is so different than other towns in the U.S. and world? And then the next question: What’s with all the trucks?

There is another reputation that is growing in Fort Collins: getting smoked out! More and more people, “primitively young men to immature grown men,” have been sold on the macho idea of excessive “exhaust kits” for their pickup trucks.

Striving for attention, several of these drivers have been adding larger exhaust pipes and purchasing “smoke kits” to make their trucks push out the darkest cloud of diesel possible. Is this oil cloud necessary? Isn’t it strange that a diesel pickup truck carrying nothing in the back of the bed can project a darker cloud than the train hauling several train cars that goes right through downtown Fort Collins? Truck drivers may have their excuses, but I have been living in Colorado for 35 years and things seemed to work just fine without all the smoke! We have emissions rules based on health concerns of traffic pollution. How these trucks pass these tests is beyond me.

The next thing that causes great concern is the attitude of these drivers. Several times I have witnessed truck drivers with heavy exhaust kits down-shift their trucks and rev their engines to dump a cloud of exhaust on pedestrians, bicyclists or other cars. To make this passive-aggressive cloud of death worse, I notice that the truck driver may smirk or laugh at those who are coughing in their path and enjoy looking in their mirror to see others gasping. If they are really feeling bold, the truck driver sometimes makes an extra trip just to get the person again. Several times a week, I see the shops of downtown Fort Collins plagued by a “diesel kit,” College-cruising truck driver. The lingering exhaust repulses customers from store front sidewalks.

Travelers will continue to stop by Fort Collins and observe how we as a community live. Will we continue to grow as a community and promote the interest of the well-being of travelers as well as permanent residents’ health, or will it be lost in a black cloud of smoke?

I really only see it down town on the Friday/Saturday nights. Diesel full of guys just going up and down main street looking for attention. Even then, I've never seen a good coal roll, its just louder if anything and a little smoke. But I can see how it does get annoying and makes our town look like a shit hole full of shit bags.

Yeah it's all around Denver. My buddy's brother owns 5R trucks and they build most of them around the Colorado area. It's no big deal to me I don't really care.

But I can see how it could be annoying. I guess my buddies don't really do it do people. They will do it to jack asses on driving though that's funny. :D

yeah but like in the article, If your not from around here or this country and then all of a sudden there's a bunch of dudes in their diesels, it doesn't make a good impression.

Its happened to me by someone I know on both the motor cycle isn't that bad because I was able to get out of it pretty fast. While on mybike its a little harder to get out of the cloud. Still does not bother me very much. My favorite is when a group of motorcycles or street racers are cutting people off then get stuck at a light and that's when the smoke plume starts haha.

Yeah I have been to several countries and you don't see big trucks you see here. I'm sure Australia and a few other places might but nowhere in Europe that I have seen.

I definitely can see that and would probably do it if I had a diesel. Sport bike riders can be real douchebags. I'm allowed to say that because I am one. And I used to ride like a douche. Grew out of that though.

Dang! Too bad it's not an auto.

I'll admit we'd smoke out road bikers when we had a diesel. Only if they're being stupid though.

No sir! I have been a respectable citizen of this state my entire life. :D

Every generation has it's young adults and there will always be some different way to be "cool". And every local newspaper will from time to time write an article bashing this sort of behavior like it is the end of the world.

These are the days of our lives....:)

Yeap. I just used a razor and put slices in it so it cannot be peeled off in one piece.
