I have long wanted a Tacoma to replace my 2000 Tundra. I found a certified used one that looks nice and has two things I really want - 4WD and manual transmission. I finally figured out that the price is nice for a couple of reasons. First, it is a four cylinder. It seems to me that I would be very disappointed with that motor on a truck this size. Second, it seems to be a base model, but has some options. Anything I’ll regret not getting on a Tacoma?

    Thanks for the insight.

It all depends on what you want. If it has everything you want/need in a truck then go for it. If you want more options then you'll need to do more looking.

I have the base model with a 4 cylinder. Seems like it could use more motor, but it was the cheapest thing I could find.

If it's a Toyota certified used truck have them install the S/C. You won't mind the 2.7 after that.

Going from a Tunda to a 4cyl Tacoma you're probably going to hate the engine.

My dad got a 2013 Access Cab Auto 4cyl and regrets not getting the V6.

Reg cab is a fairly light truck. I did intake, headers and exhaust, flywheel and clutch on my 95.5 to get the tires rolling a little better. If I had a new 4-banger I would S/C it right off the lot and be plenty happy with it. The 2.7 is a robust engine and will take a beating, just needs a little extra HP&Tq squeezed out of it :D

Forgive my ignorance of the Tacoma vernacular. S/C?

I had an '04 dbl cab prerunner with a 2.7. After 251,000 miles, two cylinders finally went out and I traded it in for a 2013 prerunner with 4.0. Love it. Gas mileage is about 1-2 mpg difference. The 4.0 is worth it.

Well, that was obvious. I don't think I want to save a bunch of money on the truck by getting a four banger and then immediately spend a bunch on it. Maybe I'll just hold out for a V6.

I went and drove the truck on Saturday. Sufficient power, but nothing more (probably why the S/C comments were posted). The sales guys "said" that the mirror was out of a 2012, because the back up mirror option is not in the 2013's. That sounds a bit strange to me. Overall, I think I need to drive the V6 before deciding. I am also concerned with what corners are cut on the base model.

I just bought a 2013 today. Mine is the 4 cyl with the manual trans/access cab/4 x 4. I would think you would want the SR5 package. Lots of convenient extras on that. I drove 2 of them before I bought it. Both 4 cyl's. I'm sure the six has a lot more power but it is also approx $3,500.00 more and gets less MPG. At that price I think one could be into a full size truck with an 8 cyl and be getting approx the MPG as the 4.0????????

Thanks for the feeback. The sales guy, who I don't trust, swore it was an SR5, but I didn't see a tag anywhere.

If it's an SR5 it should have a chrome grille, chrome rear bumper, power windows, cruise control and a few other doodads. It should also have an SR5 logo on the tailgate.

I'm getting 20-21 mpg's with my 6 cyl. Tacoma, it's all in how heavy your right foot is. ;)

    Too few to list.
I'd only get a 4cyl if it's a regular cab 4x4 5speed. I drove the auto and it was sluggish.
