new iphone- 3gs

I'm about to upgrade to the 3GS. I was able to get MMS working on my iPhone 3G as soon as 3.0 was out in the wild. I've also got tethering, which works quite well.

AT&T Can suck a big one though. It is so simple to activate MMS and Tethering, I have no clue as to the real reason why they haven't allowed it at launch. I bet it's so they can come up with some sort of new plan to fuck us over with.

 

How did you get it working? Mine only worked for a day

 

I don't know how you got yours working, but basically...

1 - Update to 3.0
2 - Force iTunes into Carrier Mode
3 - Apply Carrier Update (*.ipcc) in iTunes
4 - Remove SIM from iPhone and put in another non-iPhone phone (I used an old RAZR)
5 - Make a few calls, reset phone a few times, check AT&T website, RAZR should show up as your handset.
6 - Go to the "Features" section and apply a new SMS/MMS package.
7 - Remove SIM from RAZR, put back in iPhone.
8 - Reboot iPhone

I think it should work after that. Not sure. Don't remember everything. I know AT&T is pissed though.

 

i ordered mine on SAT and it still hasnt shipped... any one heard any rumors on how long it will take?

 

I just called Apple, there isn't any such trade in program.

 

I'm REALLY hating on Apple right now, my iPhone 3G 16GB white one worked amazing running 2.2.1 and I wanted 3.0 for the basic things like copy paste and landscape keyboards but I updated the day it came out and 3.0 sucks fat hairy sweaty balls! My iPhone was bought because of how refined and well it worked on 2.2.1 back in October and now it's so unusable, it lags like hell no matter what you do and then if the music is playing and you try to do something...well, good luck!
I went to apple and supposedly you can't go back to 2.2.1...well it saved the firmware on the computer so I just have to find it, run it, and viola! It should work right?
I mean apple can give me my $347.98 back or give me the same phone in 3GS form if it keeps running like this.
It's either that or they better have an update coming out REALLY DAMN SOON that makes it run better.

 

With all of the new functions, they will require more power from the phone (processor and RAM). This is why they created the 3G S. Some had the best luck with 3.0 on their 3G, some did not. You can go back to 2.2.xx, but you will have to find the update file and do a manual update. Apple unfortunately cannot do anything about this issue for 3G owners if they purchased out of their 30-day return/exchange period.

 

I feel your pain. Mine has slowed to a crawl, but oddly, my wife's 2G is still fast.

The only advice I can give is to reset the phone when it starts acting slow. While there are some amazing applications for the iPhone, Half the developers do not even bother with memory management.

I'm debating the 3GS. I got my 3G back in September, but the major lure is the speed and Video Camera. Then again, AT&T is really starting to piss me the fuck off.

I get horrible service at my house where I lose 3G and switch to Edge. I'll get dropped calls constantly unless I sit in one place. Then there is the pricing fiasco for the upgrade, then the whole MMS/Tethering thing. AT&T just sucks. I am thinking about getting the Pre, or possibly an android phone, but I still love my iPhone.

 

i have a 2g ipod touch and the 3gs blows it outa the water for speed. i dont know how the 3g compares to the touch though. i have one game that i tested on both and it runs much much quicker on the 3gs. i wasnt sure if the "up to" speed tests were just gimmiks or what. my mom has the 3g, i may try it out on that and compare.

 

Damn. My iPhone OG runs better with the 3.0 software than it ever did with 2.2.1

 

I know but doesn't it seem a little odd that my phone is crapping out right after the 3GS was released??? ...exactly...

Most of your problems are 3.0 related. All that stuff has started happening to mine right after 3.0 was installed. I hate 3.0 with a vengeance!!!
If you're gonna drop $200 or $300 for a video recorder and "faster" internet then I may come and kick you in the nuts...

Yea but it's not a vast improvement...on any level. The battery life is only extended on specific areas...screw this, if I had another $300 and att would let me upgrade I probably would. Especially since apple will kick ME in the nuts if I went back to 2.2.1.

 

Like I said, the 3.0 software was designed for the 3G S.

 

Sucks. I like 3.0...I just wish it was optimized for the 3GS and then reoptimized for the 3G. I seriously don't see the need to drop $300 on another iPhone. Maybe I'll sell it and rock the Tilt again.

 

That's why I never bought a 3G. There weren't enough extras (to me) to warrant a new model. So now that I'm past my original contract...iPhone 3GSuperfast for me

 

Well I was rocking the HTC Tilt but WinMo got all jacked up on my 6.1 update and att replaced it with a refurb...that broke...then another...that broke...then 4 more refurbs until I was finally like "I give up att and WinMo is getting old" so I bought the exact iPhone I wanted once they gave me the ok for an early upgrade price.

 

Well, looks like you're in just about the same boat I was in last year...minus the software issues.

 

I really like the 3.0 especially the jailbroken one. Its great.
