Stop me if you've heard this one before:

Me: dutifully shows up for 10,000 mile service at the Toyota dealership for the 09 TRD Sport with Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and M-102 Mobil 1 filter in hand.

Dealership: Is that an aftermarket filter? You shouldn't use those, they don't have anti-drainback valves and will void your warranty.

Me: mmmmmkay. Thanks for the heads up - please use what I brought anyway... :annoyed:

This particular dealer also has a "tires for life" gimmick whereby if you service the vehicle exclusively with them according to their "recommended maintenance schedule", they will replace your tires "for free" when they deem it necessary. The catch is that their "recommended maintenance schedule" goes above and beyond the Toyota items with tire balancing and alignment (every 15K - OK, I get that) and "MOC" oil/fuel/battery treatments (I smell snake oil) - so you they want you to fork over over 200+ bucks!

No thanks! Anyone else been fed a similar line, or am I missing something?

Oil Filter can't void your warranty just from using it...I'd say you need to do the math-but it sounds like their super-maint schedule is going to be more expensive then some tires when the time comes...

nope, never heard of it. I kind of alternate changing oil at toyota and lubex the closest toyota dealer is 100k or so away, they noticed that according to their records I missed an oil change, but I told them that i got it done at lubex, they just told me to make sure I keep my receipts for warranty. the only thing they pissed me off with was my fan, they told my it didn't squeak loud enough for them to fix, said it was "within factory tolerances"

Mobil 1 filters have an anti drain back valve. Procede to dealer, and point that out to them....

I got my truck from a dealer that offers a:
    Lifetimepowertrainwarranty_16bffbcd2f6326b4d2ae7adb04e53fe1e7411197.jpg

I just have to follow the recommended maintenance schedule for my truck. They "STRONGLY RECOMMEND" that I get all of the service done there "to ensure the warranty is valid". The small print in my warranty book says I can do the work myself but have to keep records for everything.

They also told my wife her brakes and rotors needed changed 2 years ago! Yet it still passes inspection each year!

    Never trust a dealer.

They make most of they're money from Service. Most people are too car-dumb to realize that what that Snake Oil Salesmen is telling them, isn't applicable to they're situation. They know this, so they take advantage of it.

For example - My mom has no clue what happens under the hood. She took it to the dealer for her 15k Service. They deemed that she needed 4 new tires because her's were severely worn. WTF? 15k miles, those fuckers should be under warranty right? She proceeds to spend $600 on a new set of tires regardless. Here's the thing, when she comes to my house, I usually check the tire pressure in her tires for her (No air comp at her house), the week before, I looked at the tires and they weren't even worn to 50%. No leaks, no abnormal wear. She got bilked $600. They know what they are doing.

    Indisputably.

Actually, that reminds me. When I took mine to the dealer for the radio (4K on it), one of the ASM's called me to tell me I needed new wipers, air filter, and cabin filter. I laughed and hung up. It wasn't the one I was dealing with.

I am coming to this realization. Good thing that the "tires for life" wasn't a selling point for me in the first place, even thought they kept hard selling it at time of purchase - I always wondered what the fine print would end up being!

I looked at Mobil 1's website for an "official spec" on this, but couldn't find one. Do you happen to have a link?

P.S. - Does anyone know what the heck "MOC Oil Treatment" is? Sounds like snake oil to me...

BTW, here is a link to the "service menu" FYI:

My truck came with a lifetime power terrain warranty as long as I put a Toyota oil filer and keep a receipt of them. I paid around 200-300 for all service for 70K, so I get everything done there.
