Thanks Jason. If i were in Melbourne, i'd know a handful of trustworthy shops to take it to. actually, if i were in melbourne i'd just do it myself. but being in a place where i barely know how to get to the nearest gas station, I have no idea what shops are reputable and do quality work. Even though you can count the number of times Toyota has touched my truck on half a hand, dealerships have at least a general sence of consistant quality, which mnakes me trust them a little more than independand shops when i have no experience with either. the warranty behind their work is also a big plus. If i didn't know what was wrong, i may be going about it differently, but since i know the exact parts i need, i know it'll be more cut and dry than a lot typical dealership experiences that involve some runaround by the sales folks. I'll call some local shops just to check, but i don't mind paying a little more for the security right now, being over 1200 miles from most of my tools if something were to happen.

I hear ya. You could always check out the local TW thread where you are and post up the question as to reputable shops in that area. I wouldn't normally recommend anywhere but the dealer, but for something like that you never know. But you are right about the warranty, as long as they use Toyota parts you should be able to go to any dealer if there is a problem within a year and unlimited miles.

I thought we both agreed to disagree a while ago but you keep poking at things.

stopped at the dealership and made nice with a very pleasant, honest young man. he informed me that they send driveshafts off to a 3rd party to have them worked on. he gave me all of their info and suggested i drive over there for a quote to avoid what he referred to as "unreasonably high markup". told me they are a top notch shop that does a lot of specialty work, so 3 joints and a bearing shouldn't be an issue. drove 4 miles down the street and got a quote from them. they couldn't get me an exact number without crawling under the truck to see what carrier bearing it was, but they said $200-$250 with labor and re-balancing the driveshaft. and almost half of that labor is balancing it. dropping it off monday and picking it up tuesday. depending on how well things go with them, this looks like it may be a good shop to go to to get it re-tubed with some thicker steel down the road.

thanks for your help fellas :)
