Knock in steering column

I have what seems like a slight knock in the steering column of my 09 Taco 2.7. When I drive over a bumpy surface like a gravel driveway I feel a knocking through the steering wheel. I assume this could be a bad steering column because I had the same symptoms with my crappy cobalt and the steering column was the culprit. Any help would be great!!

I have the same thing, from what I understand this is normal.

 

Same here. It also happened in my Ford Ranger, though that's no means of comparison.

 

mine doesn't knock at all so no it's not normal...go get it looked at under warranty just to be sure

 

I'm having my 09 Offroad TRD looked at for the stearing column. Will update next week to see what they find. My 94 SR5 knocked also.

I do not have any kind of knock in the steering column of my '09 2.7 reg cab. If I did, it would be back at the dealership getting fixed. Don't let them tell you "It's normal... they all do that" because it's not and they don't.

 

Its the steering column but mainly the U-joint. If the vehicle is still under waranty have it replaced.

If it is not under waranty leave it alone. I have been driving mine with a knock in the steering column on rough roads for about a year and a half and it has not gotten any worse.

 

I had that problem to when turning or hitting bumps or any change in incline. The knocking was actually coming from where the spindle mounts to the lower control arm.

I would reccommend tightening up those two bolts as that might be the problem.

 

Same here...I was reluctant to have the dealership look at it. The last time I took my truck in for my windows rattling and what I thought to be a transmission issue, they replaced the window seal in the rear with a faulty seal (new one on order) and they rebalanced the tires and scratched my rims with less than 5K on them all to hell. I think I would know the difference between a tire being out of balance and a transmission that shifts down too soon?

It's untelling what they'd do to my front end if I told them it was knocking. Please keep us posted on what the dealer says.

 

Mine only knocks when I'm off road. On the street it's not an issue , even going over speed bumps.

 

please explain to me where there bolts are

 

Bottom of hub behind the wheel. 2 bolts vertical and parallel to eachother.

 

and you tightened them and that was effective? and i may need a pic of them lol

Certainly worth a trip to the dealer.
Hopefully yours has decent techs there.

If I had an '09 with noise..the service director would know me on a 1st name basis....not nasty BUT I did just PAY$$ for a new TOYOTA....

It "Hurts" to see some of these dealers trying to "get by" service......I might need to send thank you cards to my service writer and tech's at Dube ...

Scratched wheels or poor service NEEDS to be FIXED,if not with service director, a walk out to the sales department ( you never want a PO'd customer on the floor during sales ) to see the sales manager,quietly ask for help.AMAZING how much "Honey" can get you while being a jerk just gets same......

Keep us updated on your "knock" and I'm going to inquire up here in Yankee town....see if it is nation wide..

Had snows swapped years ago, and their guys chipped the wheel finish.
Asked the service manager if he could touch them up.

Had an appt. a few days later, and they replaced the wheels. Over and above what I was expecting.

They beat up your wheels, they own the problem.

Be curious to hear back what the dealership found to be the cause of the knock.

 

just take it back to toyota to check it up... its under warranty so what could it hurt to go get it check...
