dood, a cb costs like 20 bucks. I found a brand new uniden 510xl on craigslist just last week.

If you want to go fancy, the 520XL used is 25 on ebay. It has RF gain, Squelch, PA, External speaker support

    $25 for a used Uniden 520XL
$25 for a firestik ii tunable unit
    $10 for 25' of RG-58A/U 50 Ohm Cable
    $5 for connectors
    $10-40 bucks for a mount

All said and done for <$105.

    If you go new:

    $60 shipped Uniden 520XL
$25 shipped for Firestik II Tunable 4'
    $10 for 25' of RG-58A/U 50 Ohm
    $5 for connectors
    $10-40 for a mount

All said and done for <$140

    Oh Jerry,

Just FYI, I received a very clear AM signal from the crew at the top of Hollister Hills down at Downtown Hollister about 7.8ish miles away on Saturday. Looks like the mount is working fantastic.

    But I don't have $140...

I really want to get a set up, but honestly I'd use it around 3-4 times a year. Rather put that $140 to the parts I need for the supercharger since I use that 365 days a year and it's a LOT more fun! :D

I think this winter I'm going to invest in one, but I have some maintenance to take care of before. I'd probably have one if my fing raise would ever happen...

Haha, I knew I should have checked with you and Jerry before putting the sc above the cb. Damn I'm going to miss out on all that static and swearing at the cb...o well I will just have to settle with the sc whine.

No static on my CB :notsure:
I regret not getting a CB sooner. But...since you never actually make it to any real wheeling meets, not a big deal for you :brianr:

Been to a few this year, but also the lack of time/money to wheel is a reason I haven't gotten one yet. Trust me if I can afford it I will be at Moab next year to watch you make grown men cry.

We should probably ask TCBob to send over some Tacomaworld stickers to Jerry too. This way it'll be easier to distribute. :)

I can help you re-run that cable, I bought 100ft of cable so I have some left over. The long and short of it is:

    1. SWRs don't tell you the whole picture
    2. Cable length isn't as important as people want you to think
(think about CB base station guys who have 60-100ft antenna cables and still can hit 50 miles w/ line of site w/o illegal signal amplification. At the radio they have maybe SWRs at 2 or 3, but at the antenna it's around 1.1 and 1.2)
    3. You need to test SWR at the antenna
      (not the radio)
    4. High Mic Gain will make you sound like Charlie Brown's mom inside a blender making health food smoothies
    5. High RX (Receive) RF Gain will tune you into signals you really don't want to listen to
    6. A bent Antenna cable or looped antenna cable will screw you.
(it's an RF choke preventing signal propagation in either direction)
    7. You need a solid ground between the stud, the mount, and the chassis.

For those of you guys who want to run your CB Properly and pickup one of Jerry's 2nd Gen Mounts at the same time. ;)

(If you pickup Jerry's uncoated mount, please bring a can of VHT Epoxy Spray Paint w/ a satin/matte finish. Bring gloss if you are a tool)

1000ft of RG58AU Spool of 50ohm cable is available from Pleasanton for $107.83 + tax here: http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/10x1-022mh.php

Buy and sell the extra at the meet!

For my 2nd Gen Access Cab Tacoma I used 23' to go from my glove box to the driver's side Taillight. Double Cab Long Beds will need another foot or so.

You'll need 2x (at minimum, 3x to be safe) Teflon PL259 Connectors w/ Reducers for RG58 Cable which I found to be cheapest for $3.00 a piece if you buy in quantities of 10 here: http://www.americanradiosupply.com/pl-259-ug-175-silver-teflon-coaxial-connector-for-rg-58/

Buy and sell the extra at the meet!

You'll be on the hook for this:

    • 1x CB Antenna
(I choose the Firestik II 4'. Optimally, you want 2/3's or more of the antenna sticking out past the roof, so choose a 5' if that's what makes it happen for you)
    • 1x Heavy Duty Antenna Spring (anywhere)
    • 1x PL259 Connector CB Stud (anywhere)
    • 25x zip ties
    • CB Antenna Mount
      (if you don't buy Jerry's)

    I can supply the:

    • soldering iron
    • solder
    • crimp
    • channel locks
    • wire stripping tools
    • deburring tool to remove excess epoxy paint to provide a good ground for le stud.

The 25' of cable, would that get you to the glove box or in the arm rest? Where is the most common place for putting the radio?

Justin, I've noticed you've been asking a lot of questions about CB installs, but you haven't given much in the way of helping you answer those questions. No hatin', just trying to find a solution that fits you specifically, but there's a serious lack of information here. I don't even know if you've picked up radio yet.

Anyway, it really depends on where you want to mount your radio.

I routed my cable along the rear bumper, then up the passenger side frame until I got under the front passenger seat and then I went through the floor grommet and along the side into my glove box.

It's going to be different if you want to mount it in the pocket in front of the shifter, or pull a Cody and put it in your rear cup holders, or if you do it under the seat. To develop any plan of attack, you need to tell me what you plan on doing because your case will not be the same as my case.
