I've been contemplating cutting the tailpipe after it comes down over the axle, I'm not sure if it would make it any louder

It doesn't get that much louder but just a tad more noticeable in the cab.

Does anyone with a TRD Catback have a quality sound clip? I've searched youtube and half of them sound great and the others sound like stock.

I'm looking to get a throaty sound, something that makes it sound like a truck... not ricey. I don't want it to be too loud so that it annoys neighbors and sets off car alarms... but I do want it to sound aggressive when I get on it. Based on what I have read on TW I have it narrowed down to TRD and Borla. Any suggestions would be great!

I am using a flow master super40 which I had installed about a year ago, love the sound but it don't do anything for performance that I can notice.

after reading every muffler post you can imagine and talking to a few muffler shops here. pretty much all of muffler shops told me that the flowmaster would be the loudest. I just wanted a little deep sound.
I almost went with dynomax super turbo but Ive heard a lot of people saying its just a tad louder than stock.

decided to go with magnaflow part #12256. took the guy about 45min for the install. pretty basic cut the stock muffler and replace with the magnaflow. deep sound, loud but not too loud.

I just cut out my afe muffler out of my afe catback and welded in a flowmaster 40 for a throatier sound...needless to say it worked. Sounds mean with my Doug Thorley Y-Pipe

With the exhaust turn down. Couldn't it clogged or blocked by mud or snow and back up into the cab?

Also isn't it a lot louder in the cab?

Those concerns are perfectly logical for off road trucks, but mine is a street truck and never sees dirt, and I live in Southern California so the snow issue is pretty unlikely. ;)

Surprizingly not. It's exactly as silent as if it had the rest of the pipe all the way out the rear quarter. I'll make a little video later today and edit it into this post so that you can hear it.

    edit:

    Here's the video... :)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI1jzAfEphM

You don't hear any of this in the cab because there are no low frequencies passing through the muffler. However, you do hear the three foot long intake under the hood.

I recently received my TRD and installed it. I am very happy with it. It definitely makes it louder than stock but not obnoxious. It has a nice "deep and throaty" sound. It gets plenty loud when I step on it, but is also fairly mellow when cruising through the neighborhood at night. I am going to try and make a video that actually captures the sound and will hopefully be adding it here soon.
