Yep,KJ6VWH. I have an FT7800 - it works extremely well, and the range/audio quality is much better than a (legal) cb setup. Problem is, most folks only have a CB or FRS radios, so I have those too.

Cool! Yeah I have FRS radios and a CB in my old Landcruiser. Likely I will do a CB setup in the Taco too.

I am leaning heavily towards the FT7900, The FT8800 has cool features like dual band monitoring and cross band repeat, but I am not sure how much I would use those functions.

The FT8800 is cool. I have not run into a situation where I need cross band repeat, but it is a neat feature to have. If I want to watch two frequencies, its easy to punch a couple of memories into 1 bank and leave it on scan, which picks up instantly. If I had to do it over again, I would not hesitate to buy an FT7800 or FT7900.

At the end of the day, both radios will perform. Just make sure you get a quality antenna like the Larsen 2/70 and mount it correctly.

Lol, not everybody wants to spend a whole Saturday learning about algebraic equations, electrical principles, components, RF Signals/propagation, Antennas and feedlines, Modulation modes, Safety, Station setup and operation, Operating Procedures, and FCC/ITU Rules/regs.

Pretty easy to get a CB up and running and also much cheaper.

This is true! Can't deny the low cost of a CB setup.

Its nice to have both! I'm covered wherever I go.

No worries man! Oh but I'm not super worried about intaking water in my engine. You need to suck in A LOT of water before hydrolocking. That's one of the last of my worries. Now if I was fording and if my intake was near a full body of water, I'd be worried then :p
