5100's at 2.5" advice

If the spring didn't rest in the top of the coil bucket, and adjusted up-and-down the shock, Ost would be correct.

I'm sure if I'm wrong (and I'm not saying I'm not.. it's happened before ) it will indeed happen. Your explanations have come the closest to triggering it though and I appreciate you keeping it civil and not attacking like some others. Now that I'm looking at it again (via the video I watched back when I put my 5100's in) I think I can see where it is different than what I was pictureing in my head from a year ago. When I did mine I did so w/o compression of the spring so I may have forgot that the spring is indeed captive which is a very important part of this equation.

Just thought that might get you a better idea of what we are dealing with here. Being able to hold a somewhat similar version of what we are discussing here in your hand, and not thinking about it on the truck. When you have the shock body in your hand and place the coil onto it and set it's height with no pressure on it, your coil is at 0 preload with the shock fully extended. If you installed it on your bike it would sag and ride like hell. Now when setting sag, static sag and ride height, you do these things (loosely) by controlling the amount of pressure your coil has on it when it is fully extended. This is the preload that effectively changes all these factors in your bikes rear suspension. I'm not sure if that helped or made it worse.

 

You raise the spring rate to go to 1.75, right? Then you raise the back 1.75, right? The front still has the same pre load on it.
Raise the front up to 2.5, spring rate goes up again, do what you want with the rear, front spring rate doesn't change

 

He was trying to bring in weight ratio's because of an unlevel truck....in reality a 2.5" lift up front is only what...less than a 10 degree change...you're not gonna see a "ride difference" because you have a small degree of off-level.

Your picture does nothing to demonstrate how preload affects spring compression when installed and how the 1.75" and 2.5" affects this. I know you think it was a drop your mic and walk of stage moment with your limited understanding of the topic you're trying to discuss but it wasn't. Also not true. Your idea of 'ride difference' clearly isn't as finite as mine. I guess my butt is just a more finely tuned machine. Deal with it.

Dude. You were wrong. You admitted it. Why don't you go back and look at how we tried explaining to you that the upper coil bucket does. Not. move. It's called preload.

Apparently you're butt knows more about preload than you do. It also knows what most of this site knows. When you preload a coil, you gain lift. You're whole theory that you walked in here touting around was fucking stupid, and now you're butt hurt because you know that.
