I thought the same thing...until I hydrolocked my truck.
It doesn't take as much water as you think. Yes...those are broken pieces of two connecting rods in the bottom of my pan and a hole in the side of the block.

Eh, the tech test is really easy. a lot of it is basic safety stuff. you really dont have to understand any of it. just memorize questions and answers. A really basic ham setup can be as affordable as a good CB. even a basic ham works just as well as a good one. you really only gain more bands and other features with the more expensive models.

This!! It really only takes a little bit. I have heard of people bending/breaking rods from running too much water in a methanol injection system

How much water did you suck up?

Too much is bad but I know just about how much I could send into the engine without it being bad. Hell it would "steam clean" it basically. Additionally a metered amount in is not a bad thing for it, it basically cools down the combustion chamber on your intake charge which nets you a little bit on the butt dyno. I experimented with a ghetto version of water injection at one time. I got tired of refilling the bottle though. Lol.

Big difference between water injection and sucking in water in from a water crossing. As whiteboy said, it's all about slow and steady. I tried powering through it. I don't quantitatively know how much water I sucked in, but put it this way, the water level was not much higher than the bottom of the door sil. All the water that was sucked up was splashed into the airbox, not because it was submerged. Which is why I said what I said earlier, doesn't take as much as you think.

Water injection is something you should be careful with too. It's possible to get too much in the cylinder and well, water just doesn't compress like air

I'd be worried about sucking up filter media too (as the water breaks them down). I can't imagine any of that in the oil galleries would be good.

A couple guys in my old car club with CAI hydrolocked their cars driving on the street in heavy rains. These were lowered Scion's, with the air filters located behind the lower grills. IIRC there were 2 guys here in CA and a handful of others across the US who had the same issues with the same CAI setup.

Most of them rebuilt and switched to short ram intakes, another guy kept his CAI and put one of those bag things (don't know if they work or not http://stores.speedcorps.com/catalog/injen_hydro.jpg) on the filter element to prevent it from happening again.

So, a slammed street car hitting a puddle can suck enough water to damage the engine. Crossing standing water certainly can, too, and easier than you would think.

This. It may as well be concrete in the cylinder.

I just remembered the stock airbox runs to the fenderwell area. That's probably what ended up happening in your case. Now that you mention it too, I am going to look into a different intake, maybe adapt the volant ram air one to my stock hose.

Water is not compressible, that's why in engineering we do pressure tests with it instead of gas, you don't need an explosion proof room.
