ARB Installation Under your Belt?

For all the talk of ARB lockers has anyone on this forum ever had one installed/ done it themselves?

 

talk to dtrujillo63. He has installed everything (electronics, air lines etc.) but had yotamasters in Corona actually install the 3rd.

 

Yeah, I think that's what most people do. I'm thinking about doing the entire thing myself though, and regearing to 4.56 while i'm in there.

 

I like the 4.56 just had some put into my 08 taco. Still breaking them in though

 

Thats the samething I did just had a local shop install it.

 

Am I insane to think I can do the whole install myself? I'd probably do the rear first, and remove the front drive shaft until I have time to do the front.

I'm a pretty technical dude and know the extent of what needs to be done, though I've never done it before. The hardest part will be setting up the ring and pinion.

I also have a second vehicle so taking the time to do it right won't be a real issue.

After acquiring the tools I'm going to need, the cost will be about the same as having someone else install it, but the knowledge, experience, and new tools are worth the extra time it's going to take.

I looked through all of the instructions and online literature when I got mine. I probably could have done it, but the 6+ hours needed to finish the install kinda of dissuaded me from doing it myself.

 

If I ever install one, I know a handful of guys in my local offroad club that can help out.

There are huge divots in the pavement at the back of one of the gigantic on campus parking lots from when they did engine swaps hahha

Ya the member that is helping out welding a custom light bar and my sliders in place runs his "shop" out of a huge storage unit. He has a loft with all his steel and can fit 4 cars in there. The guy across from showed me his V8 jeep on 37" tires

He is the club welding guru, the guys next to him is the engine guru and the guy a few bays over is the gears guru (guy that would help with ARB)

 

My husband and I have two ARB's w/ 4.56 gears in our jeep.

We paid a professional to do it. The gears/lockers have been working for the past 8 years.

But seriously.... gears & ARB's aren't to be taken lightly. I'm not saying that people can't do it in their own garages.... but.... if things aren't setup properly could make the difference between having your $600+ investment lasting 10 years OR it lasting 2 weeks or less.

 

Thanks for the advice, but I think I'm gonna go for it. This one will definitely require a write-up. It's going to be so epic, I might even hire a photojournalist. Let the games begin (in ~3-4 weeks).

 

Okay, so I pussed out and got an assembled third from East Coast Gear Supply [ashamed].

At least I pulled out the old one and am going to put the new one in, right... right?

 

You can't really go wrong with a pre assembled third. I've heard good things about East Coast Gear Supply.

Have you installed your OBA system yet?

 

Nope, the compressor and the third just shipped. I hope to have it installed by the meet on the 11th though.

 

Cool deal. Are you still going with front and rear lockers?

Regardless, your truck is going to be a beast!

 

The front is on hold for awhile because some financial stuff came up (doesn't it always?). I'm not even sure I'll have the gears changed in it in a week and a half. I might be 2WD for this meet, but I'm working out a plan...
