Look what just showed up at my door.

Box looks like shit, but there isn't a mark on the winch or any of the parts for it.

 

We can go ahead and throw that on my bumper while we wait for yours to get in.......

 

I am putting this on my night stand till then. see how the wife likes that.

 

You gonna get some blue synthetic line?

 

I would have considered it, but Super Winch says you cant run synthetic line on this one.

 

superwinch is one of a couple of companies that build synthetic line speciffic winches. the difference between their standard and synthetic speciffic winches is that the synthetic ones are build with the brake outside of the drum, while the standard ones have the brake inside of the drum. with it inside of the drum, it heats up the drum quicker. and as we all know, synthetic lines are just really nice plastic, so they can melt.

as long as you unspool your winch every so often to check for heat damage, there isn't any danger in you running synthetic on that winch. all just comes down to proper care and maintenance.

if you're considdering running synthetic, do it sooner than later, because the wire rope can rough up the drum serfice, which can cut or snag a synthetic line you put on down the road.

southeast overland is a great place for anything synthetic. Steve will build you anything you want. for your purposes, just ask for about 10 feet of abrasion guard at the winch end of the line, that way you have a little extra heat insulation between the drum and the line.

Colin, when I was reading the reviews, there was one guy that said he put on 100 foot worth of synthetic line, when I look at southeast overlands website, what size line should I be looking at in terms of thickness?

 

you'll want the 5/16'' rope. a lot of winches dont actually come with 100' though, so check your factory rope diamiter and length. if you have too much rope, you can bend those aluminum bars around the drum, which can lead to bad things. Mine only has 94' of line. also keep in mind that a shorter line with an extension or longer tree saver will result in stronger, more controlled, and safer pulls. Steve's a real nice guy. give him a call and he'll talk you through everything.

Cool. I was basing the 100' comment on what the guy said on his review. I know mine comes with 85', not sure what diameter though. I will definitely look into it, but damn that rope is expensive. Might have to wait a while seeing I just put out the money for the winch and the bumper, that's almost $1200 in one shot.

 

yeah, winches are a money suck all on their own. heavier gauge cables, in-cab controls, snatch block, and tree saver, have me about $350 deep on top of the winch, which was already $200 extra with synthetic. once it's all finished, i'll have about a grand in the winch setup

however with all of the great new winches out there, i gues it's still better than spending $1000 on just a warn winch with no extras.

 

I am definitely looking to get a snatch block and a tree hugger. Thinking about the ARB tree hugger and shopping around for a good snatch block.

A buddy of mine has a 30 ton snatch block. He uses it for hauling trees with his trailer. This block weighs prob 90-100lbs and its about 3ft in diameter. Its massive.

 

i'll raise his block to a man-sized shackle
not sure what it weighed, but i couldn't move it.
