Clarkson isnt overpaid, his contract is too long. But that means nothing to a team who are looking to be competitive in the next 1-2 years. By the time his 7 years is a problem he will be easy to trade. Most of his salary is paid in signing bonuses so once paid the rest of his contract is a cheap as possible and any team would take him. Nonis did his homework on signing this deal

Chiarelli signed Seguin to a massive contract way to soon and now had to trade him because of that shit he started. He could have easily signed him for half the 5.75 he did if he waited till this summer.
Savard was signed to a ridiculous deal even though he was a high risk of concussions over his career.
Signed Tim Thomas to a big contract and tried giving him away for free 3-4 years ago and nobody would take him. Thankfully he played great the next few years, but that situation was handled disastrously.
Lost Horton this year for nothing and nobody knows why.
Overall I just think he sucks at signing players. I mean fucking Rask just got 7 mil per for 8 years out of him. Thats insane. How does he hand that money out by goalies like Lundquist and Miller never got that in their prime, or let alone as an RFA

Savard was a number 1 center when he was signed and this was before the Bs knew what Krejci and Bergeron would turn into
Thomas was turned around for cap space when he jumped ship for the bunker
Horton was walking no matter what, holding onto him for the Cup run worked out okay. Maybe you should look at his current contract (7yrs @ $37m) for a guy who's injured every season
Rask is 26 yrs old which will make him 34 by the end of his contract - he's a legit number 1 goalie that could've seen an offer sheet if not signed sooner.
