Aren't you supposed to put a drop in the hot water line to make it more efficient so the hot water doesn't just climb the line and cool down constantly or at least insulate the hot line haha.

maybe there were code changes since it was originally installed? it's your responsibility to bring it up to code once replacing/upgrading/etc...of course you don't do it regularly like these other guys and probably don't know
