New Navigation DVD/CD/TV/AV/Bluetooth Stereo and seat mod spacers, 1" hubcentric spacers, seat heaters....
there are ways to beef the stock leafs if they are not too far gone and without the hassle of extraction and/or addition of an AAL, axlewrap is solved at the same time, rear end tracks straight (WOT and around turns) and the leafs are adjustable for heavier loads without getting air bags...oh, another big side effect, the bilsteins work properly now, I questioned the investment, now they work great...

I did it all for about $120 (not including the Bilsteins, obviously) with parts available at just about any major auto parts store (Autozone, O'Reilly's), tinkered for a couple of weeks, got ideas from members here, applied some of my own ideas from my past racing daze....

End result, rides much better, takeoff vibrations eliminated, (see below) handles heavy loads, does not have rear end side to side cornering sway because of loose or scissoring leafs, just plain solid and totally smooth on the road at any speed....

I don't offroad as a hobby, but one property I visit to maintain is a couple of miles back on a very nasty road/trail, otherwise the truck is a 'roadie' so giving it a lift is not on my agenda, just like many who have these great trucks....

(see below comment), driveline vibes taken care of with silicon injection to CB and careful realignment of driveline, I also did a minor drop of CB...grease zerks with every oil change.....

Before all this, just mountains of vibes and no idea where to start....

13 year old truck, rides like new...actually, probably better than new.....

    So easy to do....

First it was Chevy and now Ford dumping trucks at ridiculous discounts to MSRP. $14.5k in Dallas area. Made me think for a minute that maybe i should have reconsidered my vow to never buy a Ford. I came back to earth when i thought about resale.

Well. I bought my first toyota in 1989.....a 1987 hilux xtracab 4x4 with a 22-r engine and had toyota ever since....

Now I'm riding a 2007 D-cab long bed....and Yes I added a leaf on the back cause it was too soft...I carry my atv most of the time when going to camp and i hate it when it squats down too low....after that i added a 2inch lift block from Skyjacker up front and I ride on MIchelin LTX² 265-75R16.....

on road and offroad that truck handles great.....

So good my dad bought a Taco d-cab 2011.....too....

Ex wife loaded my 2004 Sporttrac with just shy of a pallet of flagstone. I could not believe how much was in there when I saw her pull up in the yard. It was barely squatting. Cannot do that with one now since they went to IRS but my Sporttrac handles a load better than my 2013 Tacoma.

Nope, I bought a 2wd because I got a good deal, and now that I want to get into off road, I'm kind of screwed.

No you're not. You can do some amazing things with a rear locker... And a winch just in case.

For the most part I am happy with the truck. The gas mileage is terrible! I baby it! I do not like how the truck downshifts at any speed going down inclines of any sort. This robs mileage! The tac jumps right up! My mileage is between 13-16 mpg. I am afraid to install a lift or larger tires which I truly would like!

167k miles and only issues I've had was replacing a pulley and a few bearings and that was within the past 20k miles or so. :)

I love my Taco! I would've preferred something a little newer than my '03, but I dislike the bulkiness of the 2nd gen. BRING ON THE 3RD GEN ALREADY!

    I'm not going to vote.

I had a 2003 Tacoma 4wd, Xtracab TRD and loved the shit out of the truck. Went to a 2005 Tacoma TRD Double Cab 6spd and kinda liked it. The 2nd gen felt weak in structure and even my wife commented that she felt the Tacoma would fold in half... Traded it in for a FJC and really enjoyed it until we realized our son hated the thing.

So as of now I'm back in a 1st gen Tacoma, a TE 4Runner and the Wife rolls around in a Tundra. Doubt I'll find myself in a current gen Tacoma... ever...

I agree with you 100%. The new ones look good but the build materials lack. Like the dash sounds thin. Smack your skull off a first gen dash and good night don't let the bed bugs bite.
