I majored in Mechanical Engineering at A&M for two years. Loved the engineering classes, did awesome at them. I don't recall them really using books all that much for the most part - I wouldn't worry too much about being bored by engineering texts.

Personally I ended up having trouble forcing myself through the Calculus classes. I do great at math as long as I can relate it to something, but I have a terrible memory so have to really work at memorizing formulas.

Really regret not just pushing through it. Ended up changing majors a few times and never really finding anything else that was terribly interesting to me, then my college career just kind of petered out (fewer and fewer hours, until I just quit entirely).

I make a decent living as a programmer now and enjoy what I do for the most part, but could be making a lot more (and likely still enjoying what I do at least as much) as an Engineer. It's enough that we have a decent house in a decent neighborhood and my wife is able to stay home and raise our daughter, but at the end of the day we have to sacrifice having the money to buy a lot of fun toys, take vacations, etc. We have a good life and I'm thankful for what we have, but it sure would be nice to be able to have some of the fun / experiences the additional money would bring.

Moral of the story: don't sell yourself short on the long term for the want of not having to endure something boring for a few semesters.

Whoever said that is full of shit. I like fucking, but I wouldn't want to be a gigolo. Having to do something whether you're in the mood to do it or not takes the fun out of it, regardless of what it is.

That is pretty good advice, I can relate to having problems with math that I can't really apply it to anything.

There is a saying that goes something like "Don't depend on your passion for your job because it'll become a job and not a passion". I'm sure there are other variants on that theme, but I think it's true.

It's why I never became a porn star.

Something else too, being a mechanic now may seem easy enough to get into and the money might even be decent for a 19-y/o kid, but when you have a family, being a mechanic won't seem so attractive. Just some food for thought.

Not usually in this thread since I don't live in Houston anymore, but trust me, being an auto tech is not bad at all! When I was living in Houston I was bringing in $100k plus per year. Not many jobs out there that bank that kind of cash. Plus I LOVE doing this. I don't care if it is a lowly oil change, or high tech performance mods, or fixing some Soccer mom's minivan. The satisfaction of seeing a vehicle on the road because I was the one who made sure it was safe and running right cannot be matched.

It is NOT an "easy" job to get in to, but it has it's up sides. If you like working on cars, consider getting into the ASEP program with a local GM dealer, or get an entry level maintenance job with a Toyota dealership. It takes a few years of grind, but it does not take that long to get into the big bucks if you work at it, and do quality work. I started off at my first dealership 20 years ago, and was making $18 per hour back then. Hard work and determination got me into another dealership where I was in the $21 per hour range in 2007. When I was in Houston I was making $26 per hour. The money is there, that is for sure. Don't think you are "settling" for a job as a technician. Think of it as a great career choice.

As far as raising a family, I was doing this with a wife and 2 daughters. We lacked for little, and we were happy. Now my kids are grown and making their own lives. MONEY does not a happy family make. Spending TIME with them and loving every minute of it is what counts for a happy family.

If we arw on the same page, its something like find a hobby and turn it into a passion, then turn that passion into a career and you will never work another day in your life.

Hey, if it worked for you then I'm happy for you. Few people can say that they love their job. The last paragraph is absolutely crucial for anyone with a family IMHO.

Feel free ANY time to pm me with questions. I have been doing this for over 20 years of my life, and I love it. I even have my own shop now. Not rolling in the cash, but I live in a VERY small town. Google the town of Eagle Lake outside of Houston. Now cut that in half. Yet after opening my doors just under 2 years ago, I am less than $3k in TOTAL debt. I grossed 52K in the first year I was open. And that is in a town of less than 1500 people, and a county of less that 5k. I'm not rich, but I am happy.

    4.88 for 35s?

Wouldnt 5.29 be better? Also, if I get 5.29 I would have my sliders put on
