Fuel System Cleaner

Ethanol Medic FTW. I use it in every tank in my boat. 1oz. treats 16 gallons of fuel. It may not differentiate itself much in our trucks, but I've tried it all in marine applications. Sta-Bil, Startron, and SeaFoam. I don't have a scientific test, but I do have a real world experience.

I bought a boat that had sat for about 6 months, which gummed up the entire fuel system. It has a carbureted 351 engine. Started off using my go to, which was SeaFoam. It ran, but not great, and it would occasionally shut off due to the fuel tank pick up getting clogged with a brownish gum like sludge. (27 gallon aluminum tank with no easy way to clean out) I was able to remove the gas, but the gunk remained. Then I tried Startron. I think it's better than SeaFoam, but I was still having to pull the pick up and clean gunk out of it. Ran through a couple tanks with Startron having to clean the pick up every other time I ran it. Then a family friend who works on jet skis gave me a bottle of Ethanol Medic. (He did his own test with all four mentioned) This sounds like a sales pitch, but this stuff made my boat run the best it ever had since I bought it. Never had to clean the fuel tank pick up after using it either. Did I eventually clean all the gunk out of the tank before using Ethanol Medic?? possibly... but I doubt it. Just my experience, but I swear by it.

 

Marvel Mystery Oil... I dunk the truck in it one a week. It runs great.

I have seen SeaFoam sold in places that rent equipment like tractors and chainsaws.
it's definitely good for anything that sat for a few months (including chainsaws and generators). I've seen my generator bought off CL craigslist purr much better after a proper dosage (watch the dosage in small fuel tanks!). I've used it on cars too, but probably a waste, unless car sat somewhere for a while.

 

Where can you get this at other then at the dealership

BG44k products on Ebay and other online sales places like Amazon. This chemical is added to your fuel tank on fill up and slowly works to clean light deposits in injector tips and on valve stems and backs. If you want to take care of heavy valve deposits and severe carbon build up on the valves, AND the intake runners, then you should use this:

Which is designed to clean the entire induction system. HOWEVER to do it properly requires a special tool like the one below.



This tool, and a special adapter for the throttle body, allow the chemical to quickly clean the entire intake from the throttle plates back. THAT is the way to clean it if you really want to take care of the oil and carbon deposits on an engine. MOST dealerships charge around $199.00 to do this service, but make SURE that the tech does the INDUCTION cleaning service, not the INJECTOR cleaning service, which uses the same tool, but only cleans the injectors and valves.

BG makes some pretty good products, but they are normally for commercial sales. (dealerships, independent shops, etc...) However you can still get them. I swore by them when I was in the dealerships. I have had trucks come in with random misfires, lean codes, rich codes, etc. and simply used an injector service and/or induction service, and they ran like a top afterwards, when other shops would tell the customer they needed new injectors, to the tune of $1000.

 

Could you be more specific? 1st gen? 2nd gen? And what product are you talking about using. Different products will need to be ingested at different locations.

As long as you use a quality gasoline with a good additive package. Then you don’t need fuel system cleaner. It’s a waste of money because it’s already in your gasoline.

 

It's really a preference. Personally, I feel that using an additive in your gasoline does help, but the fuel system is still prone to buildup. Which, I feel, is a good reason to use products like seafoam through a vacuum line a couple times a year. It's like a deep clean that the fuel additives don't get.

Seafoam

 

Sea foam used to clean the throttle body on my car and poured some in my tank.

 

Another vote for Seafoam - I use it in my ZX6R and I have used in my BMW's of days past...

Not sure whether the prices are universal - but our local (in central VA) Northern Tool has SeaFoam for ~$6.50 for the 16oz size...

 

I've used Seafoam and the Chevron Techron stuff. I liked the Seafoam better as a induction cleaner than the Chevron stuff as a tank pour.

 

I use lucas with my 94 chevron fill ups.... i dunno if it does anything but it makes me feel better.

 

I use Marvel's Mystery Oil, I have been pleased with the results in other vehicles, have yet to use it in the taco though...
